Strangford Lough is a sea inlet,but Loughs Neagh and Erne are inland lakes. Carlingford Lough is a broad inlet, more like a bay, unlike Strangford, which is narrow.

English wiktionary defines lough as "lake" or as "long, narrow inlet." from the Irish loch for "lake" or "inlet of the sea." Is it the lake or the sea inlet definition that merits Erne and Neagh being preceded by lough?
