I appreciate this whole conversation. In fact, I think I might know you, if you're British. Only through crossing paths at unofficial Runefest events.
I did see the forum post where this article was mentioned. I'm sorry to hear that a JMod (or forum mod) hid it, though I'm not hugely surprised. I heard recently that all mention of Insight Venture Partners, IVP or Jeff Horing is being filtered out of the RSOF. I guess they don't want all this negativity turning up in the Google SERPs. Oops. :)
I'm glad that your comments haven't got hidden in the melee though, as they now exist here.
Yes, Nexon (funded by IVP and funders now in their own right) are spreading their business model like the plague, through many other games too. Runescape wasn't the first, nor will it be the last.
Gaming as a whole is struggling through the recession. It's worth checking out what Brandon (a fellow Wizzley author) has to say about Zynga and the Facebook effect too. (
http://wizzley.com/zynga-falls-could-it-be-due-to-lack-of-creativity/) As for my own beloved Gielinor, I admit that I embraced the return of free trade with much wooting and open arms. I was devastated when it went away, because my friends and I were always giving each other gifts. But I started to become alarmed when katanas became exclusive additions for buying game cards. Pay extra for the same membership and you get that too.
It's been seriously downhill since then. It seems to have sped up after the news was broken that Andrew Gower had left the company. Or maybe that was just because our eyes were wide open then.
