Is Your Home Safe for a Deaf Person?
What ever happened with the carbon monoxide alarm? :o
So I have a story myself about special alarm systems for hearing impaired individuals. When I lived in the dorms my first year of college, they had these specially equipped rooms, some different than others, each set up specifically to work best with different types of disabilities. In most dorms halls it was 1 out of every 5 rooms or so that were equipped this way. These rooms had alarms for deaf in case of fire, but my favorite were that each of these rooms also had what looked like doorbells, I suppose, on the outside, except they made these lights go off inside the room, intensely brightly and whatnot. I guess in case they can't hear you knocking or something? Not sure. My freshman year the dorm hall I lived in was on the first floor, and so all of the rooms were equipped this way. I assume that because it was the first floor, that is just the most likely place to put someone who was disabled, especially if they were in a wheelchair or something.
So anyways, I'm sure you can imagine a bunch of rowdy college freshmen in the wee hours morning, in the beginnings of what would become an epic prank war, and these loud and very bright lights equipped in every room in our hall... There is nothing better to do at 2 in the morning than to stand there at your friends door and hold that doorbell type thing down until you hear them wake up...and then you bolt back to your own room :D Fun times.
There was another time a friend and I were the only ones left in our dorm hall over a holiday weekend and we decided we were going to learn Morse Code since no one was around to be annoyed by the lights and buzzing. Equipped with Morse Code alphabets, we opened the doors to our room so we could hear the buzzing that went off alongside the bright flashing lights and attempted to communicate using those 'doorbell thingies' (as I have dubbed them). We had a lot of fun for quite a while until campus safety showed up to let us know that others outside our dorm hall could, in fact, hear what we were up to. >.> LOL (With that fun ruined for the night we then proceeded to make flyers about our missing pet snake and hung them up all over campus.)
