A rocking horse is a rocking horse. Of course, every child loves to sit on it, rock on it, and laugh on it. Nothing can beat the smile and laughter of a toddler as he sits and enjoys his favorite plaything. But before we go on to take a look at some of the best rocking horses for kids, let's learn a few things about this traditional toy.

Interesting facts about the rocking horse

Rocking horses date back to hundreds of years. King Charles I of England is believed to have had one of the first actual rocking horses and this was in the early 1600s. In those times, these toys were supposed to help children prepare for riding a horse as adults.

While rocking horses are meant to be fun for children, these are also quite good for the development of motor skills. The rocking motion helps children in learning how to balance themselves. This is why these toys are considered to be quite good for kids with autism or other physical and mental challenges.

How to choose a rocking horse

The older versions of this fun toy were quite simple in design. However, these days, the horse is often finely crafted with a mane and a tail. Different colors are used to make it more appealing for toddlers. While wood is the traditional material for a rocking horse, these days, you can find this toy made from soft materials as well.

So, you will find plush rocking horses. These are soft and quite comfortable to sit on. Some horses even sing songs or make horse-like noises. So, basically once you start exploring, you will find that there are a variety of options you can choose from.

While colors and materials and these extra features can be a decisive factor in your purchase, as a parent, you should make sure that the toy you buy is right for your child. For example, you should check if the size you are buying is right for your child. Some versions are perfect for younger toddlers while others may be only suitable for older kids. A big child sitting on a small rocking horse may lead to accidents if the toy is not able to stand the weight of the baby. So, make sure to consider the size of the rocking horse.

While buying, make sure that there are good grip handles for the child. A padded seat will make it more comfortable for the child. There shouldn't be any sharp edges that could hurt your child. Basically, ensure that the toy you are buying is safe for your precious kid.

Well, even I think the traditional wooden one is the best. But it is indeed hard to please the kids of today. So, they will want a soft mane and comfortable seat and sounds...and the list goes on. For them, these options could turn out to be much better. Thanks for stopping by!

I like the traditional style. I have fond memories of my eldest son rocking back and forth for long periods, singing the "Mickey Mouse Club" song from a record he loved. It was an old song even then, from my early childhood actually, but it was his favorite.
