Ummm......
Errrr....
I started smoking in college....and now I'm 44...have weaned myself down to 10 American Spirits a day, which I smoke 1/2 at a time...so I'm "on the road to quitting" and should have it mastered by the time I am 80 years old! :)
Oh...but I don't inhale!
Yeah, right.

Forgot to add...
But i still think 10 American Spirits a day is better than a Big Mac a day, Cheetos, soda INCLUDING diet, chemical laden sodas, prescription medicines, fluoridated city water, synthetic hormones, boxed/processed foods, cell phones on my head 24/7, antacids, xrays, sugar, dead/canned veggies, urban air quality, asbestos insulation, tanning beds...ummmm....how much time ya got for my rant?

HA! Same brand, only I smoke 20/day. (Down from 60/day) Yellow pack. "Lights", so I can wean myself down, over the course of several decades. No "Ultra Lights" because you've got to have at least something to "wean down" on.
Let's hold hands and hope we'll make it to 80.

Oh, please keep ranting. Any justifications for smoking are welcome.

Ha Ha,
I'll stop the ranting...and I'm ok with not making it until 80...but the hypocrisy of only the things being labeled bad by the media (cigs) being up for debate - with the plethora of "everyday things" taking lives every day...well...
I'd be glad to "debate" what is happening to the health of kids eating pop tarts and Cocoa Pebbles for "breakfast" each day....any day...
The hypocrisy stresses me out...time for a smoke! Where's that milk and cigarettes?! Jo????

The East of England got it too, but where I am I think we got off lightly. The trains are still running. The roads are not as covered as elsewhere due to the snow falling when traffic was available to clear it.
I too live in a town that can only be accessed down a hill, or exited from up a hill (obviously). Usually heavy goods lorries get stuck and effectively cause the town to be cut off from the outside world - except for the train service, but this year, so far, this has not occurred.
I did stock up with a few essentials before the 'shock arrival' of the snow. I am now 'snug as a bug in a rug' looking out on a winter wonderland - pity it was not the same view at Christmas!
Thankfully I never started smoking (nor tea nor coffee drinking) so I have no vices/addictions that would cause me to 'have to' go out for a 'fix'. No deep cravings for chocolate or anything else affect me so my 2 freezers and stocked cupboards should see me through to better weather (sometime in mid-April!). Planning and foresight are great things at this time of year, when 'unexpected' snow arrives.
Not going out to drive anywhere, for anything, any time soon. I'm staying put until the thaw completely disperses the white stuff.
Anyway, glad you got home in one piece Jo. When the snow is 6ft deep, maybe that will cause you to face 'cold turkey' and you can get rid of the remaining frozen Christmas leftovers (see what I did there with 'cold turkey'?!! - ha ha).

I could never go cold turkey, Chaz. I'm a vegetarian.

*dies* It doesn't have the same ring somehow, does it?
I do have some Quorn turkey in the freezer. I could settle for Cold Quorn Turkey. Though I won't. :D

Ever seen this:

note the ingredients that are found in animal products. You may not be eating them, but you are ingesting them.

I have never smoked, but would have to run out to get some spirits if I ran low for sure.
Don't you guys in England have plow trucks and sanders (sand trucks) - grit, did you call it Jo?
What is your average snowfall over there?

We have gritters which put grit on the road, but they're not exactly good at getting there before the snow falls, meaning that the UK tends to just descend into chaos when it gets a bit icy. At least where I live anyway.
We never really get snow to the point of getting snowplows, it's mainly a thin coating which turns into big ice sheets. We rarely do get snow though, I'd say only 2/3 weeks a year it'll snow and even then it won't get much deeper than a few cms.

I do understand this. I live where many feet of snow fall each season and it's nothing to have huge storms and piles of snow all winter. The towns plow the roads regularly and puts sand and salt down so the driving is not bad, and I have my own guy come to plow my driveway -at $30 a turn (he comes twice in one storm if it's a biggie).
I once visited northern Georgia (US) in the winter and a small storm hit (a couple inches of snow) which literally shut down the town. My husband and I being from New England, were amazed at how they just couldn't deal with it. Shops closed and everyone stayed home - presumably smoking, drinking and enjoying their milk with tea.

Wow. I missed all the action here the past day.
Great story, Jo. Well told - and reminded me why I left Toronto.
Never smoked (cigarettes) so I can't figure out what all the fuss is about. But no milk for my 2 coffees a day - that would get me out in any weather.
