I often create (or rather, attempt to create) my own thumbnails for the pages I post here, but I'm never sure how it'll look in the new queue or on the front of the site before I actually publish the article.
There might be a way of viewing this, but if not, would it be a good idea to implement it?

I don't quite understand the necessity of this, Paul.
If it doesn't fit the way you want it, simply change it and republish.

I'm just very OCD about things and I often end up changing things upwards of 20 times before I'm happy, so for me personally it'd be useful to have it all finalised before I publish it, but again, I'm not sure if that's only me :P

Simply try to relax and be a bit LCD.

I just make them all squares of 350X350 px and they seem fine.

Just to let you know, how these images are obtained:
We have three different thumbnail sizes for our page images. Two of them are square: 92x92 px and 60x60 px. To get the 92 px thumbnail, we scale down the original image so that the shorter side matches 92 px. Then we crop the square image - placed in the middle. A bit hard to explain in words only, but I hope you understand it. The same goes for the 60 px thumbnail.
The large preview image in a down scaled image of the original (correct aspect ratio) - with a maximum width or height of 250 px.
I hope that helps - e.g. you could simulate this cropping/resizing in any graphics editor like GIMP ...
