Magnetic Dress Up Doll Sets and Toys

by Marie

Dress up doll sets that are magnetic are fun for kids to play with because they can easily add clothes to the dolls which do not easily tear or fall off. Great as travel play sets.

Once upon a time, all doll dress up games were aimed at young girls. Until recently when manufacturers suddenly cottoned on to the fact that they are not the only ones who enjoy playing with these types of toys. Magnetic style sets are a real step up from the traditional and old-fashioned paper variety. My daughter and I still really love to cut out fun characters to play with but since they end up getting torn from just a little play, we looked out for some more permanent solutions instead.

The sets that you can buy now are so much more inventive with kids being able to put their choices of outfits onto characters that they really love from ordinary girl and boy designs (just like them) to more cartoon and fantasy characters as well as grown-ups in a variety of different occupations. We love the mini metal travel tins which are ideal to occupy a child while traveling or dining out - and we take ours everywhere. You can get some really nice wooden sets too both for travel and using at home.

Melissa and Doug are one of our favorite toy producers. They have a wealth of fantastic items that really appeal to kids and they last such a long time too since they make a lot of great quality wooden toys. We love their rubber stamp sets, wooden play barn, jigsaw puzzles and more. But one aspect has been lacking with lots of their sets and that is that many don't come with a lid so you can store everything without fear of losing pieces.

This wooden dolly dress-up set comes complete with its own carry case so Melissa and Doug are obviously cottoning on to the fact that parents like sets to come with easy storage too. The clever carry case means that a child can take this set on vacation (we love sets in storage tins or cases for Holiday travel) and it can be taken out and about to play with too. Another place where it's good to take some toys is when you dine out since kids can get easily bored and are less interested in the food and conversation than the adults are.

You get two stand-up models in this set which are double-sided so there are actually four different characters for girls to dress which means that friends can join in on the fun too. It's much more fun to have dolls that can stand up as well as lie down and the magnets keep the outfits in place. There are tiny pieces in this set with the hair accessories but it is great that children can enjoy having so many options in one set which allows for multiple mixing and matching of clothes.

Kids who love the Disney movie, Frozen, should be delighted with this wooden doll and stand set which features Princess Anna as the character to dress. She comes with 25 pieces of clothes which are wooden and magnetic and the items are things that are recognizable from the movie too. This is a cute looking set. You can also get a matching Elsa set too.

So many little girls (my own included) dream of being a ballerina - now they can play out that fantasy by having their own little dancer doll to dress. The Nina Ballerina set by Melissa & Doug (not pictured) is an easy character to add clothes to since the wooden outfits easily attach in place with the clever magnet system. It's highly reusable and the only downside is the lack of a proper lid once opened.

Another travel option is this versatile fashion doll set that comes in its own carry case for ease of taking from place to place. With over 40 different accessories and two different dolls to clothe, girls will surely have something to enjoy playing with for a good while. Note that these dolls lie flat and do not come with stands.

For something completely different that can capture a young child's imagination, Melissa and Doug have come up with a beautiful Mermaid design (not pictured) that can wear different tails, tops and accessories. She comes complete with a stand so the Mermaid can be stood up while she is being dressed.

Large wooden dolls can be better for younger kids to hold, play with and dress up. It's a great size for hands that lack those fine motor skills and that find it hard to pick up and handle tiny pieces. True to most of the Melissa and Doug sets, it doesn't come with a lid. So grab a ziploc bag to hold all the pieces. These dolls come with stands so they can be easily dressed with a child sitting at a table too.

More of a robot creating set rather than a dressing-up one but many children and especially boys should love having such a fun magnetic play tin that can easily be taken out for travel and vacations. All the pieces store away neatly in the tin and there are 4 different background images to place the parts on. My daughter would like this since she likes robots and this set allows you to design your own and give them accessories too.

The most fun to be had, however, is in assembling the different robot body parts to devise your very own unique and funny creation. The robots can be made in the tin or put them all on the refrigerator for kids to enjoy in the kitchen instead. This is a novel and fresh take on the dolly dressing market that's for sure.

A sports loving boy may enjoy a wooden stand up Jack figure (not pictured) by Melissa and Doug. He comes with a variety of different sporting outfits and accessories including hockey, football, baseball, soccer and basketball outfits. Actually this one is quite educational since a child can learn about the different sports and the uniforms for each as they are playing. It could be a fun item to use as a teaching tool.

Joey is another wooden stand up version (not shown) that should be ideal for boys because it is based on everyday heroes such as police officers, firemen and construction workers. And then there are the pretend heroes too such as knights, pirates and super hero clothing and accessories. Joey stands up and is easy for young children to dress with the different outfits - but can they get the right pieces on him.

Any girl who loves horses should really adore a beautiful wooden piece set (not shown) based on these creatures. There are different manes, tails, saddles, bridles and other accessories to dress up this gorgeous white horse. Have fun selecting a wonderful gift.

Great idea, my daughters and I have spent countless hours playing with polly pockets, the dolls with the magnetic clothes but made of a sort of rubber. They are a keeper, these magnetic paper doll dress up sets fall into the same category of good toys to hang on to.
