Best New Fantasy Books 2013

by lauryallan

Here is my list of the best new fantasy books due to be released in 2013 There's nothing like a good fantasy book to make yourself relax and find yourself in another world.

I've been an avid fantasy reader since I was in high school. I've read so many fantasy novels that invariably I end up reading books that are part of a series that aren't finished yet. This has happened to me so regularly that I have given up trying to find fantasy book series that are complete, and instead I wait patiently for the next installment in the story.

Here are the 2013 new fantasy books that I am eagerly anticipating in order of expected release date. Details of each series or book have also been included.

A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson

The Finale of the Wheel of Time Series

Expected release date: January 8th, 2013

It's been a long wait for this fantasy series to finish especially when you consider I first began reading this series when I was 15 years old. Now that I'm 30 I'm just grateful there will be an ending to this epic saga.

Many fans were fearful at some points that the Wheel of Time book series would never finish, especially inlight of the time it was taking Jordan to complete each successive novel and then later when he died of cancer.

However, another fantastic author stepped in, called Brandon Sanderson, and finished the series according to the notes left behind by Robert Jordan before his death.

If you have never read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan then you are really missing out. It's a long fantasy series, but eash book passed quickly. You'll be attached to the chaarcters before you can believe it. It doesn't matter if you are male or female, there are characters in this series for everyone.

Some of my favorite characters include Egwene, Rand, Mat, Perrin, some of the Aes Sadai and the Aiel.

Since it's been so long since I read the first book in the Wheel of Time series, I think I will have to read the whole series again!

A Dance With Dragons by George R R Martin

Book 5 of the Song of Ice and Fire series also known as Game of Thrones

Expected release date: March 26th, 2013

Another longstanding fantasy books series that I have been eagerly awaiting the next installment is the fifth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series by, George R R Martin.

This fantasy series has gathered even more fans lately with the series being adapted into a popular tv show on HBO called a Game of Thrones, which is the same name as the first novel in this book series.

We all want to know what happens to Jon Snow on the Wall and with the evil that is raising in the frozen north. Will Daenerys Targaryen ever cross the seven seas with her dragons in the hopes of reclaiming her father's throne? What will become of the Lannisters, especially Tyrion? There are so many unanswered questions and characters that we love and love to hate.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

Book Three of the Infernal Devices Trilogy

Expected Release Date: March 19th, 2013.

Cassandra Clare's first popular series was the Mortal Instruments trilogy, which is being turned into a movie as we speak and is due to be released in August 2013. It is one of my most anticipated book to movie adaptations of 2013.

Author Cassandra Clare didn't rest on her laurels and began writing another series, set in the same world but in a different time period of history - the Victorian era. The location of the story has also relocated from New York to England.

In the Infernal Devices Trilogy, expect to meet supernatural creates such as demons, shapeshifters, vampires and warlocks. When these supernatural beings mis-behave and break the rules, Shadowhunters come in to clear up the mess and end the life of the miscreatant. They have the power to do this as they are part angel.

Although Infernal Devices is set before the Mortal Instruments trilogy there is a character fans will recognize in Magnus Bane, avery old warlock. New characters are introduced and Cassandra Clare continues with her love triangles and strained realtionship, causing heat-ache and turmoil for our lead characters.

If you haven't read the other two books in the series, then you're missing out on an amazing world and characters.

Blood of Dragons by Robin Hobb

Book 4 of the Rain Wilds Chronicals

Expected Release Date: April 9th, 2013.

Robin Hobb is a fantastic fantasy author and always brings something special to her tales, characters and world's. She continues in this vein with the fourth book in her most recent series call the Rain Wilds Chronicals. However, it isn't a completely new series and is actually a follow on from the Live Ship Trader series.

The Rain Wilds Chronicles is about the failed attempts of dragons to hatch after being too old to make the journey to the their hime turf to change into dragons. The people of the Rain Wilds previously mistook the dragons cocoons for logs and made ship from them. This gave the boats special properties, but meant the next generation of dragins weren't given the proper guidance and help to make the transformation themselves.

Although they have managed to become dragons they are mostly small, stunted and disformed. They are unable to fly and have become a nuisance to the locals. The decision is made for the dragins to go on a quest to a lost city, where they believe they will find the answer to their problems. Will the Dragons find a cure?

However, there are many natural dangers lurking in the Rain Wilds as well as dragon hunters that believe dragon parts are worth killing for.

Many will not return from this journey.

Sworn in Steel by Douglas Hulick

Book Two of A Tale of the Kin

Expected Release Date: June 5th, 2013

About a year ago, there was nothing for me to read and I was desperate to read a new fanatsy novel. I went to the bookstore and had a look at some of the books that I'd not read yet and none of them appealed to me, until I picked by Douglas Hulick's Among Thieves. The only negative I could find was it was the only book of his I could find on the shelf. I wasn't sure if I should read it, because if it was as good as I hoped it would be I'd be desperate to read the next installment.

I raced through this book faster than most and read it within two days. The plot and characters are compelling and intriguing. I also liked that it's not your typical fantasy novel where you could guess the outcome from the start.

Among Thieves isn't about romantic connections or love triangles. Instead, it's a more complex book to explain but is about thieves that belong to different gangs in effect. These gangs are at war and each gang belongs to a Gray Prince. These Gray Prince's have powers and abilities that make them special, but are not omnipotent.

At the end of Among Thieves, without too many spoilers for those who haven't read this book yet, a Gray Prince is killed and a new Prince takes his place. There are many layers and misdirections in the book. There are amazing fight sequences and I truly can't wait to see what this new Gray Prince does to consolidate thier power.

The End is Nigh

2013 looks like it's going to be a good year for fantasy books and some of us have waited over a decade, to get an ending to some of the best epic's in the fantasy genre.

If you are a fan of fantasy novels then perhaps you should try a few of these books. It will give you lots of decent reading material as well as a whole new world to delve into and explore.

I hope you enjoyed my pick of the best new fantasy books in 2013. If you don't see me for a while, you'll know I have fallen into another world and have yet to resurface!
