Romance is often heighted by surprise and by the feeling that your loved one has gone to a lot of effort to make you happy. One way of doing this is through cards. Instead of buying a store made card for an occasion, consider getting a card making kit, and making the card yourself when your loved one is not home. An old photo may make a useful addition, or an image from a place where you have good memories together. Make sure your loved one does not know what you are doing: perhaps visit a friend’s house to make the card, or send your loved one out on an errand.

Cards are not limited to any one occasion; consider making one simply to say ‘I love you’. Delivery is another aspect. You can give your loved one the card over dinner one night, perhaps with a bunch of roses, or place it in the mail and wait for it to arrive in the post. This can be particularly effective if the two of you live together, as it heightens the surprise. A homemade card is much more personal and thoughtful than one that has been brought from a store, and you can include a personal message that will mean something special to your loved one.  

Instead of going to the movies, consider having a romantic movie night at home. Buy several romance movies, such as Pride and Prejudice or The Notebook and plan to watch them one after the other. Make sure both of you have the night free, the phone is off the hook and the front door locked. Perhaps you may want to dress up and provide snacks and drinks for the evening, or cuddle up on the sofa under blankets. However you approach it, a movie night in your own house is much cheaper than going to the movies, and there is no stress in dealing with other people talking, with finding parking, or uncomfortable seating.

While romantic actions do not always have to be gifts, periodically giving your loved one gifts, (especially if there is no occasion,) acts as a constant reminder of your love for them. Buy them a book they have really wanted to read, or pick out a piece of jewelry for your wife that suits her very well, such as a sterling silver heart necklace. Not only is this a present that your spouse will love, but as she wears it, it acts as a reminder of the love that you feel for her.
