About Snow Leopards

Snow Leopards Live in the rugged mountains of Central and Southern Asia. They are usually found in altitudes of 9,800 and 17,000 feet. Snow Leopards can jump and /or leap vary far. They are able to jump as far as 50 feet.

Their tails serve more than one purpose to them. The tail is very big at one end and while it is still big it gets skinnier as it attached to the cats body. They serve purpose for balance and as a blanket. On cold nights the cat uses it's tail to protect the more sensitive parts of it's body. The tail is 36 inches long, and snow leopards are usually anywhere from 60-120 pounds.

Snow Leopards have to hunt their own food, like any wild animal does. They can eat blue sheep or otherwise known as bharal. The blue sheep is usually around Tibet and the Himalaya, mountain ibex. While Snow Leopards can kill prey up to three times their size, they usually just stick to hares, game birds and marmots.

Snow Leopards are also known as Panthera Uncia.

The Danger

Snow Leopards are in a great deal of danger from the black market and other means. Poachers will kill them because they can go for a great deal of money in there. Snow Leopards are used for traditional Chinese medicine. The pelts -which is the skin of the animal with the hair still on it- and body parts is what are sold for traditional Chinese medicine. Snow Leopards Sometimes kill live stock, and this in it self angers very many farmers. There has been times when farmers will go and hunt for the cats and kill them because they are angry. Another reason why these cats are going endangered is because their habitat is starting to disappear.

On October 23, 2013 members from the Global Snow Leopard Conservation Forum had made a difference. President Almazbek Atambayev of the Kyrgyz Republic and officials representing the 12 Central and South Asian Snow Leopard range countries joined conservation experts and the International Donor Community. Together, they endorsed Bishkek Declaration on Snow Leopard Conservation. They had also endorsed the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Recovery Program.
