Something else I feel is important to add is that currently individuals who get insurance through their work have the premiums subtracted from their paychecks. But if they tried to by the kind of coverage health insurance one gets through a job, it could easily cost 600 to 1000 dollars monthly. The cost for a very very basic coverage, which may or may not include dental, and will not be helpful in the event of even, say, a two day hospitalization averages out between 150 and 300 dollars a month.

People think that switching over to a universal access health care system requires more control of their lives via the government (which many do not trust and misguidedly use the term socialism, giving it a negative connotation) as well as higher taxes. By establishing an NHI and relocating the billions and billions of tax payer dollars that are funneling into administrative costs, technically the cost of the insurance won't go up at all. Even if the taxes we are already paying toward healthcare do go up a bit, in general the out of pocket expense will be immensely lower, starting with far cheaper monthly payments for insurance, and trickling all the way down into cost of the medical care itself, from doctor visits, to x-rays, to bigger health problems and treatment for chronic conditions.

And excellent example of an American health care system that is accomplishing this present day is the VA. The nature of individuals is to complain more than to compliment an organization, so there are a lot of stories about horrific wait times and horrible treatment, but I believe those will come with any hospital. However, despite individual complaints, the fact is the VA health care system is quite adept at efficiently but effectively treating their patient population, at an incredibly reasonably low cost to them (if any cost is incurred at all). At least our veterans don't have to return home from war with no work, and no health care, especially with what war can really do to a person.

Just wondering, what about the underage/unemployed in Britain? They're not paying for the insurance for healthcare (not by wage deduction at least), so does it make them eligible to receive treatment for free, or is it paid by their family?

According to your poll you asked if we prefer the British healthcare system or America's. I answered neither. I would prefer a National Health Insurance. Considering the health care system organization America already has, if we were to successfully switch over to some sort of universal access healthcare it would be very reflective on something like what France has (which is an NHI with the option of going private if you both want and can afford to do so.)

-It serves as one of the easiest and quickest ways to make a profit.

Cons of America's healthcare system
-Cost, most expensive health care system, yet some of the worst data on maternal and under-five death rates of almost all developed nations
-greed, debauchery, corruption
-no one who isn't among the richest can actually attain true wellness, only health care after they have become ill. Next to nothing in our system promotes preventative care.
-the people who need it the most are the people who can't afford it
-To me personally, if any one single person is in pain, put out, or dying because of the set up of our healthcare system, it totally isn't worth it.

Socialism isn't Marxism, but when people say "I don't want it because its socialism" what they are really meaning is fascism or communism not socialism. But I say it isn't Marxism, its a battle for a basic human rights. It isn't communism, it is humanitarianism.

She's telling me about her friend's mother being sent away from ER seven times, with her stomach bleeding, because she didn't have health insurance.
