Draw A Cartoon Cat
Learn How To Draw A Cartoon Cat
How to draw a Cartoon Cat is a step by step drawing process that I created and I have collected all of the sketching process in a sequence of step by step illustrations for you to follow and try and draw your own Cartoon Cat. Of course this isn't an exhaustive look at drawing Cartoon Cats, but it's a start and one you can hopefully become inspired by to sketch up some Cartoon Cats of your own.
I did edit some parts of this as it would have looked even longer had I put every step by step drawing on here, but if you really want to see the full thing in video format, then here is the link to my video - How To Draw Cartoon Cat it's a silent video and you can pause it anytime you want if you missed a step and are following along.
The collection of images below shows the inital sketching stage on how to build up the body, so just try and have fun.

Refine And Define Your Cat Drawing
Darken And Improve The Pencil Lines
Now that you have the rough shape you can begin to define the elements of your Cat, such as the face and the fur around the Cat and darkening the pencil lines helps to achieve a clear drawing. This is also your chance to improve the bits you don't like and make the drawing as a whole become more presentable.
Sketching In The Stripes Add Character To Your Cat
Furry Stripes Always Look Good On A Cat
When adding the black furry stripes it suddenly makes your drawing look more Cat like and also adds elements of visual interest. Although don't make the designs too complicated try and make them as simple as possible so that when it comes to the coloring stage it's easier to lay down some broad color.

Ink Your Cat Pencil Drawing
When I inked this drawing I used a gel ink pen which are always cheap and affordable to use and the trick is to go over the pencil lines but also improve the drawing along the way and if that means cleaning up some areas that need attention then do that in this stage.
Pilot ink pens are also good to use as are Sharpie markers, it's entirely up to you what ink pens you use though.
How To Color Your Cartoon Cat Ink Drawing
Coloring With Crayola Twistable Pencils
When coloring in this stage I used 4 main colors to achieve the finished color drawing effect.
A Black for the furry stripes all over the Cats body.
An Orange for the remaining fur on the Cat
A Yellow for the highlights on the Orange fur.
And a Pink for the nose and lip.
Below you can see the step by step process of the coloring stage and notice that after coloring with the orange I allowed some white space which would be for the yellow color highlights which help to blend the two colors together.

Draw A Cartoon Cat
The introductory paragraph advises us not to "worry if you make any mistakes" drawing cartoon cats.
Cartoon cats are such beloved profit-makers. What do you do with mistakes? Do you erase them or do you transfer to another paper, in the hope that the mistakes might not be mistakes in other contexts?
Thanks for the tutorial. I work in colored pencils. I'm going to get some Twistables for my grandkids. I also use Prismacolors, but maybe I'll give these a try.
Cheers now! Lol Sunforged! I remember the days of my Son and Daughter grabbing all of my best art pencils and crayons and snapping each and every one of em! the little....Darlings!
Crayola Twistables are my best art pencils and they are up there with my Prismacolors too.
I'm working on a flipbook animated project for a new video hubpage and it's turning out quite well....
@siserou Thanks! It's a chore to do to add these images one by one but I like the look of the wizzles with lots of step by step images as it is something that I haven't seen other artists really do as they prefer to let you fill in the blanks of a complicated drawing tutorial and simply don't break it down sufficiently.
A fun tutorial! You know afterreading, if you scroll up and down real quick, the images almost become animated, like a flipbook.
I haven't seen twistable crayons before, seems like a very clever take. As of late, I have been confiscating crayon from the baby as she attempts to feed them to the dogs. Perhaps, this style would be less appealing or hold up to a few more chomps!
Thank you! certainly my how to draw cartoon cat turned out better than my how to draw cartoon dog one, but then I seem to draw cartoon cats more than dogs even though in real life I like Dogs better as pets lol ah well! cheers now!
Excellent tutorial with great photos of your cartoon cat. I've never liked to draw animals as they always ended up looking like unrecognizable cartoons!
cheers now! there will be more cartoon drawings as time goes by....
cheers now Katie! I've definitely got more planned.
My daughter loves your work, and cats are a favorite, thanks and keep em coming.
Thanks Paula! I was certainly trying to draw something other than I always draw for a change....diversification and all that jazz!
