Artist Table Top Easels for Kids

by CherylsArt

Are you looking for easels that are a great size for kids? Table top easels come in a variety of sizes, and are a perfect choice for both younger and older kids.

A table top easel is also portable, so it's easy to take along on a trip, or to paint and draw plein air. Most come with a drawer to easily carry supplies, such as paint brushes, drawing pens and markers, pencils, paint, canvas, paper, erasers, and more. Come on along, and I'll show you my top picks.

My first choice for young kids is to have an easel with two sides.

On this one below, there is a chalk board on one side and a white board on the other.

The two different sides gives the child some versatility, and also makes it convenient for two children to use it at the same time. It is recommended for children, ages 3 and up.

Not sure you want to offer multiple children a choice of sides? Just set a timer and announce Time to Switch.

The top portion has an open slot to serve as a handle.

The unit below is quite sturdy and is constructed of fiber board and wood. It comes with chalk and a paper roll. There is also a channel on each side to hold chalk, markers, brush, etc.

My second choice for slightly older kids is a table top easel with a drawer, shown below.

Keep in mind that whatever is put in the drawer, does add weight to the easel.

If your child will be carrying the easel themselves, make sure that the weight is light enough for them to handle.

The compact easel below holds canvases up to 11 by 14 inches. The drawer has three compartments, giving the young artist a place to store their painting and drawing supplies.

The back part that holds the canvas is open. You may want to place a hard smooth board there to tape a floppy canvas to, or else use hard board canvases.

There is a handle for carrying.

With Amazon's discount, it is an inexpensive option. It usually runs less than $20.00, and also qualifies for free shipping if you spend $25 or more.

The drawer opens up in front on this easel.

This easel has four adjustable positions.

My third choice is for the older child who is serious about their art.

It holds larger canvases, comes with a handle, and has multiple adjustments.

The unit below has various screws to tighten up to adjust the angle, and also the height of the canvas area. So you have a lot more versatility in the canvas sizes that you can use, and also the angle of the canvas.

Like the easel previous to this one, it does have an open area where the canvas will go. Again, you will either need hard board canvases, or a smooth hard board to place in the grooves.

I have this unit myself, and use a hard board to tape my canvases to. I use low tack painter's tape.

This is a slightly larger easel that accommodates canvases up to 34 inches.

The draw is accessible from the side.

The Ravenna Table Top Easel is made to hold larger canvases.

It has a side drawer.

The drawer has two long compartments and two shorter ones.

It folds up to a compact size.

It can still hold the canvas when it is folded up.

Tip - If you are going to use a wood easel to paint with acrylics,

you may want to coat it with several layers of varnish first, so that it won't soak into the wood.

I've never really had a problem with that with my wooden easel. I have the Ravenna, and it is fine. Other reviewers did however, and recommended coating the wood.  You can decide what works best for you and your circumstances.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.

You're so right Peggy! I actually got my first easel when I was around 35. It was a two sided easel that I shared with my daughter.

These are great choices. Easels really help budding artists get into the act of painting.
