Cinco de Mayo Mexican Fiesta Party Supplies

by lakeerieartists

Are you planning a Cinco de Mayo party this year? Or helping a friend plan a Cinco de Mayo party? Here are supplies to get you started.

If you do not know, Cinco de Mayo means the 5th of May, and commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Mexico, and is slowly becoming an unofficial American holiday. It is one more reason to go out and celebrate at your favorite Mexican restaurant, or have a Cinco de Mayo party at your own home. All you need are the right Cinco de Mayo party supplies, some good Mexican cooking, and you are ready to go.

Planning a Cinco de Mayo Party

I have listed some inexpensive and very colorful Cinco de Mayo party supplies throughout this page. Ebay sellers have the best bargains when it comes to Cinco de Mayo party supplies from pinatas to balloons, from napkins to sombreros. It is traditional to have party supplies in the colors of Mexico, but not necessary, so get your invitations out, and start planning your Cinco de Mayo party.

Cinco de Mayo is a Celebration

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration, and meant to be a party with friends that has great food and drink, and just good old fun.  So you can decorate your house with streamers, pinatas, and sombreros for your guests to wear, or you can turn it into a costume party with a prize for the best Mexican costume.

Decorate in bright colors for your Cinco de Mayo fiesta, and carry out the theme with inexpensive paper napkins, balloons, tablecloths, and centerpieces which are all available on Ebay for very cheap.  You can either have a pot luck with each person bringing a Mexican dish, or you can make it yourself.  One option that makes a variety of foods without much work is to have a fajita table where each person makes their own and adds whatever ingredients they want to their tortilla.  This avoids any allergy problems or vegetarian restrictions.

Wear a Sombrero

sombreroParty sombreros are fun to wear, and can be purchased very cheaply online from Ebay or you can spend some money and get a real sombrero.  Party sombreros are usually made from straw, and very colorful.  One option is to buy plain sombreros, and have a sombrero decorating event at your Cinco de Mayo party.  Depending how much Dos Equis has been passed around, this could prove to be very funny.

Or you could have your guests decorate their sombrero in advance of the party for a contest.  You could give out a prize for the person who brings the best decorated sombrero.  Maybe the prize could be a gag gift like a toy horse or burro, or a big black mustache to wear under the sombrero.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Balloons

Colorful Cinco de Mayo balloons make a great addition to any Cinco de Mayo party whether it is for adults or kids, and there is a very nice selection on Ebay that you can have blown up with helium at your neighborhood gift shop.

Of course, it really isn't a Cinco de Mayo party without at least one pinata.  Pinatas are traditionally filled with candy, and hung from the ceiling.  Guests are then blindfolded one at a time, spun around, and handed a stick to hit the pinata.  They are given just one or two tries, then the process is started again with the next person.  The goal is to break the pinata and release the candy for the children to enjoy.

Pinatas are made out of paper mache, and decorated.  Many pinatas are in the shape of animals, but they can be made of just about any design as long as they are hollow inside.  You can either make a pinata ahead of time, or buy one online.
