Colorful Fall Foliage - Leaf Peeping in New Jersey

by happynutritionist

Many travel the country roads of New England leaf peeping in the fall when the colors are beautiful, but New Jersey is also a beautiful place to enjoy fall foliage tours.

New England and upstate New York have beautiful fall foliage, but we also have wonderful forests that show their colors right here in my home State of New Jersey. I remember how proud my husband was of the Aspen changing color in his home State of Colorado, and it is pretty, but it's only yellow...not our array of colors which include light reds, dark reds, yellows, oranges, tans, browns, green speckled with yellow and so much more.

I look forward to the start of the fall foliage season in September, and then October when the colors are at their peak. Being surrounded by a State forest and preserved "open space" land makes for wonderful drives viewing colors, with stops at orchards, pumpkin patches, to hike, or whatever we might want to do to take in the fall experience along the way.

So come along with me and enjoy colorful forests right here in New Jersey painted with God's paintbrush during the fall of each year.

Fall from our Bedroom Window

We are so blessed to have trees all around us

There are trees to be seen from every window in our cabin

Above is a view out of our bedroom window, or from our deck.

From the window we can take in the beauty of the changing seasons, but the fall is the most colorful.

The hill across the lake that you see looks much better in "real life" and is so pretty when the trees begin to change. The lake is as smooth as glass some evenings and as the sun sets, it reflects the color on the lake forming a beautiful mirror image.

We are thankful for the beauty that we enjoy each season, especially in the fall.

weather.com Fall Foliage map with current conditions

You can click here to visit weather.com's Fall Foliage Map and see when the leaves are beginning to change, are at their peak, or are finished for the season.

At this update it is the 3rd week of October 2016, and leaves on many trees are at their peak right now in Northern New Jersey,. The highways in some places may not be the best viewing due to drought conditions and highway traffic and exhaust, but the country roads will give you much to enjoy. Central and Southern Jersey is still early on in the changing of colors.

I hope you enjoy fall in places where you live, or perhaps it is green all year round, or maybe you will have an early snowstorm!

The changing seasons are an amazing and beautiful thing. Make the best of them.

Map Your Foliage Trip in New Jersey

Here are a few locations you may want to visit

Here are a few places that are not so very far from where I live in Northern New Jersey. You can drive the roads in this area, and then if you wish, work your way into Upstate New York to enjoy the colors there.

You can search on on Google Maps or you can look at the map provided above, I have marked a few places for you to visit, but there are many more. You will have to zoom out (click - in the upper left of the map) to see each location. Sometimes you can zoom in, and can drag the little figure of a man in the upper left to a destination and it will provide a street view of the area.

A. Wawayanda State Park is a great place to enjoy the outdoors while in Northern New Jersey

B. Near Ringwood Manor State Park you will find the New Jersey Botanical Gardens. The surrounding area has wonderful marked walking trails in the woods. Sterling Forest is nearby, another great place to view the colors.

C. You may also want to visit Long Pond Ironworks, a historic location that has wooded trails so you can mix history with your colorful walk.

D. Norvin Green State Forest - has trail heads along Otterhole Road and perhaps other locations.

These are just a few of several places local to me that many beautiful locations to view the fall colors. If you zoom in closer on the map to these areas, you will find other parks and preserved land to explore.

There are links to many more places to enjoy leaf peeping in New Jersey later on the page.

I live in Florida so our fall is not nearly as colorful as yours. However, we also don't have all that cold white stuff you get in the wintertime.

@DerdriuMarriner I do feel so thankful to live in an area where nature surrounds us, that is a blessing indeed.

DerdriuMarriner on 05/26/2015

happynutritionist, Autumn's colors prettify all landscapes, and each location is beautiful in its own way. Differences in flora, geography, and light produce a spectacular array of colors which are enjoyed by many. It is heartwarming to think of those who make a point of looking out their windows or of venturing on road trips for the incomparable pleasure of enjoying nature's autumnal show.
