Gay news?

Checking some new comments on my Coconut Water page, I was surprised to see a prominent advert for the Palm Springs Resort which included two men being rather intimate with each other.

I'm not a homophobe, but "time and place etc..." Google adsense places ads related to content, but there's nothing on that page to suggest a gay bent. Unless you count the frequent use of the word "nuts".

I'm bemused more than shocked - but I fear it may detract from the message I'm trying to send out. Am I being a prude? Surely not!

I've just started a Wizzley (still in production) about my recent visit to Lacock in Wiltshire. That's a combination of words which may produce some interesting ads!

I rushed over to see, but alas only Groupon for me.

It's ages since I've been to Lacock.

Well, I'm seeing an ad for homeschool curriculum. Google often tailors the ads to the viewer's past searches and history.

I'm just sayin'.

Are you suggesting that visitors to my pages are gay? Or even that I am?  It's an interesting proposition - you should visit often. If only to test your theory!

I did notice that Google seems to try and match ads to a visitor's browsing history more often now. Not saying they always get it right. Wink

If you are using your own Adsense ID you can also set filters in your account for ad categories you wish to exclude from your pages. "Category filters allow you to block ads in certain ad categories from appearing on your site, regardless of how they're targeted."

For this, you need to look under Adsense Setup > Ad Review Center and check the categories you wish to filter out. Google will also show you the percentages that these categories currently contribute to your earnings. If it's a major earner for you then you may want to think twice before blocking them. I would do this only if you frequently receive ads that offend you.

No, just a light hearted comment, Prospero. Laughing The ads we see do often relate to our own Internet history rather than to the page itself. But like nightowl said, sometimes it's very, very OFF. Odd combinations of key words set off some strange associations, it seems. It can be very frustrating when doing a Google search for something that is outside of your norm and Google keeps interpreting what you mean in light of your past searches. What a pain.

I knew you were being lighthearted and your response amused me. In fact I began this thread with tongue firmly in cheek. I didn't expect it to get serious. However, I did state on my coconut water page that "I value my nuts too much to get them castrated". That may have encouraged the gay ad. Then again, maybe I may be attracting a few eunuchs. ;)

Chortling hugely at the final sentence in Prospero's original post.

Now I think I had better rush over and check my Bullying website - I did an article about the Bullying of gays on it a few weeks back. Never gave a thought to the Adsense ads that might be appearing on it.......
