I would love your input on this.
My page about seashells could go in a number of categories.
It's biology, educational, a hobby, a collection, and marine life.
Should I choose:
- science - fields of knowledge - biology
- education - science - fun with science
- hobbies - collecting - other collections
- pets & animals - marine life - seashells
Do any of you have advice to help me choose? I had it in #3 then changed it to #1, then saw #2 and finally chose #4, but I doubt that people look for seashells under "pets and animals".

I'd go with four. Sometimes you just have to close your eyes and pick one.

I think seashells needs to be changed from the pets and animals category/ section - the creature that lives in the shell is possibly a contender for that description. However, an empty seashell is neither a pet or an animal once the creature has vacated it.
I totally agree with you here.
The category under marine life should be "mollusks", but it's "molluscs" in the UK I believe. But that is closer as it is the name of the animal.
I guess I'd like to see seashells in the hobbies category instead of having to choose "other collections".
Still a dilemma for me. Thanks 2uesday.

I vote "hobbies". Seems most appropriate given the way you treated the subject.
It would be "pets" if it was alive and science/education if you gave more of the biology of the creatures that live in them. Well, there's another topic for a new article, no?

It should definitely go into collecting as you're clearly writing about collecting sea shells. About the category we'd have to see what happens.

It's funny but I just came here to say that I have decided to leave it as a "hobby".
It is the category most fitting.
I am not at all good at science, so I hate to put it there. No one has a seashell as a pet unless they have a hermit crab inside it!
As you say wrapitup4me, I'll use those for my other pages - maybe.
Thanks all - I appreciate your input.

WE must have been typing together Brandon!
Yes, I agree.
Thank you.

You need to understand categories as descriptions of broad areas, e.g. "collecting".
"Seashells" is then the term for a narrow focus on your page title.
So, "Hobbies --> Collecting" seems to be a good categorization. "Seashells", or various sub-niches thereof, will then be specified in your page title(s).

Put it in the one with least articles in, as long as it is relevant obviously ;-) SY

Categories are the bane of my life, for the very reason that you have encountered today. So many of mine could go in multiple categories or, worse still, there's no obvious fit.
The amount of times I've been tempted to go to the suggestion forum with a request for a category that reads: 'Stuff Jo Wants to Write About Today'.
However, I've calmed down considerably over the dilemma anxiety, when I realised that you can keep moving them around. It doesn't affect your URL, as that remains the same wherever it is. I try articles out in various places, then shift them if it's not working/I change my mind.
I moved one yesterday that was written eight months ago and is currently in its third home.
I'm going with 4, by the way. For the sole reason that it says 'seashells'. :)

Yes, makes sense.
Thank you. I'll try to look at it this way when I am in a bind.

I'd go with hobbies, because that's where I'd look first, not pets. I do see your point and I have a terrible time too with categories.
I didn't know, Jo, that we could change them without disrupting things. Hey, that's great! Maybe I'll try that!
