I'll be interested in what happens with Sandpiper Weddings as well.

I also have wanted to join etsy for long as an affiliate, but i dont have a website of my own and i think they want to see one before they approve me as an affiliate. Is that true?

I would certainly love to use etsy here at wizzley via viglink but i think that also needs approval. What should i do?

Digby has said that she applied to use Etsy on Wizzley, so I'm sure she'll let us know what happens there.  I haven't had time to apply to the Etsy affiliate site yet, but I will try it with my website name.

Younghopes, I don't know how you would apply without something to use as a company name.  It is required.  I couldn't get past the first page of the application without filling that in.  I will certainly let you all know if I get approval.

Okay, I spent some time this morning applying at the Affiliate Window site, and I ended up terminating my application.  (BTW, I did use my website as the Business name - as I began typing in that box, a popup appeared that said that was okay to do.)

As I read through the 12 pages of AF's terms, there were some things I didn't understand / like.  First of all, I had to provide a credit card and pay $5 which would be refunded "when we first pay you any commissions".  But if my application is rejected, they keep my money.  It's not a huge deal, but when filling out the CC form, it said I'd get that money back when I was approved - not when I get a commission.  I had to read the agreement to discover that.

I must login to their "Intranet" to find merchants to promote, but I won't know more about that until I am approved.

I am also unsure of the "consent to us publishing the information you provide to us on our websites", unless I notify them that it is confidential - not exactly sure what information that entails, and they don't explain.  Also, if the agreement is terminated, they will still have the right to publish my information.

And I am responsible for the quality and origin of the visitors I direct to the Merchant's websites.  And provide "traffic data" when asked.  Perhaps it has to do with mismanagement of a site and sending visitors by unauthorized links, but I don't understand how I can do that.

It was a lot to take in, and the site allows US affiliates to sign up (I am in the US), but the information seems geared toward the UK, as they mention VAT and "the law of England and Wales".  You can search and read the 12 page Terms and Conditions in PDF form.

For now, I will think it over.  I am not sure the little bit I plan to do is worth agreeing to all this.

I haven't heard back yet, but that's not something I want to touch with a 10-foot pole. In over 10 years of affiliate marketing, I have never had to provide a credit card or pay to have my application reviewed. Etsy has been super difficult to deal with and I'll just do without them from now on.

There are so many other options besides Etsy, even some of the smaller affiliate programs that focus on handcrafted items.

Even amazon now has handicraft products, so i think i might go with that.

I am afraid I must agree with you.  I wonder if it's possible that some of the people on Etsy may also be in the hand-crafted category on Amazon, as younghopes mentioned.  Or, maybe they will be at some point.

Ah well, live and learn.

Etsy recently went public and I am wondering if they've got a bunch of new people there who are paranoid that people will get both an affiliate commission and selling fee. Zazzle actually encourages the proces.

I read that Etsy sellers could not sign up for the affiliate account.  Instead they have to sign up for something else... don't remember what it was called.

I wanted to update this with some info.  Paula Atwell (who many of you may know as lakeerieartists) highly recommends becoming an Etsy affiliate.  She and others have said (on FB) that they are making good money with it.

So now I am re-thinking this whole thing.

Have you signed up? I saw that Paula recommended it as well.

Not yet, but I plan to give it a try.  Right now I am too busy to do Etsy affiliate promoting - but soon.
