I have an internet connection through my cable company (Time Warner). A router in my office (where I work on my desktop) provides a WiFi-signal for my laptop in the living room.
I'd like to buy a Kindle Fire and browse the web while I'm lounging in my living room recliner.
Can I simply connect with my existing in-home WiFi, or do I have to subscribe to a separate data plan?
Thanks for helping me out on this.

Your existing Wi-Fi signal would work just fine. You may not be able to use the Amazon cloud service though. Amazon says only U.S residents can access it. I don't know if it has changed now. Just check and if you get the same error let me know, I have a workaround for that.

Thanks, Natasha. I do reside in the US - in Austin, Texas.

Let me know how you like it. I am playing with finally getting a smart phone or getting an iPad instead. Part of my reason is using the mobile cc availability. I am not sure if that is available on iPad, but I know it is on phones.

Maybe I should wait until I can afford an iPad. Well, there's no rush...but keep writing, Paula, so I make more money fast!

I absolutely love my Kindle Fire. Like Natasha mentioned, it will pick up any wireless; you just need the username and password.
The Fire does everything I need it to do at a fraction of the cost of an iPad. When I am working, I use my laptop. When I am browsing, or watching Netflix, I am on the Fire.

Can you actually visit a website and log in? Not necessarily for blogging/writing, but at least to access your Wizzley account, etc., and use social bookmarking features...things you can do during tv commercials.

I love my Kindle Fire, I can't say enough about it
Chef you can do anything with it you would an iPad. I like it because its easier to carry around as I beat about the house, I fumble my iPad almost dropping it. If I bought the fire first I probably would not own a iPad...

Yes, you can do almost everything. As far as Wizzley is concerned, I only found two limitations, one is that you can't write an article on Kindle fire as the text editor is not supported and secondly, you can start a forum thread but can only write on the subject field.
Also, Google ads don't show up on KIndle fire, something to consider I guess.

The tablet market is moving at an astonishing pace!!!!!
Achim, you can use your wi-fi at home or the office. I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab wi-fi only tablet a few weeks ago but when I am on the road I can tether wirelessly my iPhone as a 'modem' for the tablet as well. If one does this, just watch out for your post paid data allowance. It kinda sucks in Australia. Im on a plan for about 2gig, but using a tablet it sucks up the data rather quick and 2 gig never lasts me a single month.
But then again, I got the tablet for mainly wi-fi hot spots and for home.
