Root Canal

I had a root canal this Tuesday and it's awful, painful and worse than I imagined.  Anyone have any tips for recovery. I haven't eaten since Monday, other than liquids and am wondering when the pain may be gone. It was done on a molar.

They gave me Vicodin but I only took one and it made me loopy and nausea... OH THE PAIN

Kate, this is soon weird!  I had my root canal on Wednesday and I am going through hell!  The pain is unbelievable...   I am on Amitrypteline which is a painkiller and mild antidepressants.  My heart goes out tou you, bit you are not alone.  I am also using a bag of frozen veg wrapped in a tea towel!   Have also had two codeine as well as the ami, bit still in awful pain.   Going to bed soon.   :(

Surprised OH MY GOODNESS! This is such a coincidence. I too think I'm going to bed. I might try another Vicodin after I try to get a bit of something on my stomach.

As it is I cannot shut my mouth without feeling the well you know.

I'll imagine you feeling better and resting well.

Thanks for the encouragement, at least we're not alone...

I didn't realize you would experience a lot of pain after a root canal. Feel better ladies.

I feel for you ladies. Had the same thing done last year and was hurting for weeks to the point where I thought my (usually very good dentist) goofed up, or something. Even now, a year later, it's still sensitive to hot food or drink.

I know this isn't much help to you now, but I've decided not to get another root canal on my molars ever. I think I'd rather let 'em pull it out altogether. Sealed

I had several root canals but never experienced any pain like that! The down side was after a number of years I lost the teeth anyway. Might as well pull em.Cry

Hope you're feeling better really quick!

Actually this does help. This is only the second day BUT I too was thinking oh no what has he done, did he slip and tunnel a hole into my jaw, seriously it does feel awful.

I now know this is typical and will ride it out. I'm always the one who thinks I'm so tough I can snap back in a few hours or a best a day. I guess I've met my match.

I might have a glass of red wine, that must have some nutrition.

Thanks for the support

MINE was a crown anyway and so I will need to have the crown replaced, I have that to look forward to... ARGH

Owee owchie ouch!!

Hope you feel better soon, both!

Oddly enough, I have been editing a lot of dentistry content provision lately and that has made me think that I really do need to go back to the dentists again, despite the fact that I generally don't frequent any medical professional's waiting room too often if I can help it.

Prevention being better than cure, perhaps, given what you're going through at the moment?

Get well soon, My thoughts are with you. Sending over the Nurofen-Codeine and a spare bottle of your favorite alcoholic forget-about-it-juice.

Having endured jaw injury myself Katie, can I suggest meal replacement shakes? Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry Slim-Fast types are my faves for those days when nothing solid is possible. After my recent bout with the cold from all hell, which actually kept me in bed for three days and may even have been mild flu, I went back to work on Tuesday morning and decided that a strawberry shake was a good idea. It went down and stayed down, despite the fact I'd not eaten anything solid in around 36 hours.

Nutritionwise they're better than ice cream, taste the same and are smoother. My husband knows that if I refuse a shake and haven't had any soup lately either, then I really am sick and should be watched closely.

Hope you and Kathleen both feel better soon!

I had an abscess a couple of weeks ago and it was hell on earth. The only thing that gave me any relief was holding an ice cube in my mouth against the swelling. It took the inflammation down and relieved the pain. Katie, have you tried warm soup or yoghurt?

I have also had root canals that did not hurt like that afterwards... or maybe I blocked it out!   But I've had a wisdom tooth pulled - at the age of 40 - and that was a nightmare.  I will be keeping the other 3 till I die.  Maybe it's worse the further toward the back of your mouth...???

I had vicodin to take after my appendix came out and I couldn't take it either.  It made me feel horrible.

I feel bad for you both - Katie and Kathleen... hope the pain goes away real soon.... Cry

Thanks everyone, I'll try the meal replacement shakes, and warm soup. I gotta make myself eat something cause at this point I've lost my appetite, I'm like a little kid when it comes to eating and feeling bad, I refuse to do it. BUT I know I have to tomorrow will be day three so hopefully better.

Katie, just try a fruit youghurt too. Honestly, quite filling, not too warm or cold and very easy to get down when you have tooth pain.

Hi, thanks everyone for kindthoughts ansuggested ions.  Last night was awful, but took painkillers and got to bed.  Today it's been nowhere near as bad and I have basically just sat on the couch all day, eating very little and not talking....so far only a few twinges, it's in the background rather than full on.  Hoping it will stay that way.

Katie - I do hope you have felt a bit better today.  Thinking of you.

take care all, Kathleen

Yep, I have decided on that road too - I'd rather have a gap than go through this again!  Undecided  (and at my age is it that important - nope!)

I agree with you girls on the thoughts of EVER having this done again;;;;;

I am feeling a bit better but I swear my tongue is still numb, it feels very weird. The pain is better.

NOTE , My dentist told me most dentist won't attempt a root canal on a molar. I'm beginning to understand why...

Good night everyone sleep tight. I'm giving up and going to bed. It's early but I'm done.

May you all have a restful sleep...
