After amazon hit us the other day, today I got my first email from one of the merchants ShinigZ I guess it was telling me they were terminating California affiliate programs.

Fun times!

That really sucks, but I can understand from the merchant point of view why they would not want to deal with it.

I keep thinking that something will have to replace affiliate marketing if this trend continues.  I don't know what that will be, but there has to be a way to make a living on line.

I'm sorry to hear that. I wish state lawmakers would take the time to understand that no online company needs affiliates that badly. It's not that they can't calculate the taxes on a state basis. Paying the state sales taxes and paying the affiliate commission, makes it unprofitable in many cases. So they don't. But don't lose heart. Rhode Island is rumored to be considering repealing their affiliate nexus tax. So start working with your state rep. You might want to email them each notice that you receive and indicate what that merchant paid you last year.
