Question about Topics

Okay, I am going to say that I didn't read through this entire thread, so I may be offering my opinion on the Arts/Crafts issue after the fact.

The arts/crafts debate on what is an art, and what is a craft is hotly debated in the arts world.  My feeling is that my art--jewelry making is a fine craft which is not a hobby, yet in many places when in a category is found to be in the hobbies section.

However, in the interest of the operation of the site, I am more interested in having the site run smoothly.

My personal preference would be to put all arts and crafts under arts and crafts, and not hobbies.  Then art and craft each would be a sub topic under the arts and crafts header.  No article will get lost if it is good enough.

Being the kind of person who is outside the box more than inside the box, I often find that my topics do not fit where I believe that they should go, or there isn't a category for them.  However, the good articles do get found anyway.

The connotation of crafts as a hobby is the biggest issue, as many people do crafts professionally, and earn their living at it.  But again if the keyword research puts crafts searches into the hobby section, then leave it where it will be found the most.

Paula...we tried last night, and this was a compromise.  I totally agree that Arts and Crafts go hand in hand better than in Hobbies.....however :)

Paula, the issue is that we can't change the list of top categories anymore. However, we've added "Crafts" to the top category description, i.e. "Hobbies, Games & Crafts", so people can see it on the categories front page. From there, searchers for crafts articles can click on "Crafts" in the right side bar and see all the sug-cats.

As you said, good articles will get found anyway because people usually search for their crafts niche. 

Paula, as always, you have certainly pointed out very important facts!  I have been crafting my entire life and I do consider my talent an art.  I am just so grateful for Crafts being placed somewhere easy for a website searcher to find, that I will gladly take either.

I do love seeing the word Crafts under a main catagory heading. 

A side note and just a personal opinion, when my crafts are set next to your gorgeous paintings, even I will admit that my talent is lacking :)  Oh, how I wish I could paint!

Nope, once again, sorry to say it still does not work, but it did let me log out and then back in again.

Hey Mouse...well It seems only you and I have been kicked off and reinstated...so does this mean that later tonight when I have time to come back and work that I can expect more "issues"....I like it better that you find the bugs first.
