Who owns a national anthem?

Ahead of St David's Day, I've been writing about all things Welsh. Today, I went for Land of my Fathers.

Wales and the Welsh National Anthem

I was going to add the lyrics, mainly because they're all in Welsh, so I thought an English translation might be appropriate. (Going on the assumption that most of those reading won't be fluent....)

The Wizzley rules say no lyrics unless you own the song though. I'm assuming this is to stop people turning Wizzley into a lyrics factory.  I left them out, because I'm not sure if I own Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau or not. And if I don't, with all this Celtic blood, who does?

yours

Jo

I don't know about the copyright on the lyrics but you can find 'Land of my Fathers' all over the Internet with the Welsh and English translation as well - so can't you just link to one of the pages that already provides this as a useful resource?

I have included a You Tube video that does half of the job, but it only covers the first verse and chorus, not the third and final verse, which I was mostly talking about in the article.

Also, the translation in it is a bit dodgy.

I could link out, though it seems a shame to send people out of Wizzley, when I'm not sure this situation is what the team had in mind, when the rule was made.

Edit:  There is no copyright on it. It was written in 1856 and belongs to the entire Welsh nation.

If there's no more copyright on it, you can use it, Jo.

We want to avoid articles with nothing but lyrics, because of the potential copyright and duplicate content issues.

Ah!  I was being over-cautious again.  I'm glad that I checked then.  Thanks for the clarification.
