Why has my author rank dropped?

I just realised that I was no longer on the second page for authors and that my rank percentage had dropped from 100% down to 99. What does this mean? Do you have to be constantly adding new Wizzles to stay at the top here?

Your author rank is based on several factors within two categories, at least as I understand it.

The first is how well you've filled out your profile - picture, mini-biography, Wizzography.   You seem fine on those counts.

The second is frequency and quality of posts.  Write well and write often is the key phrase here.  Look to your page ranks.  If there are a lot of them slipping down, then it'll affect your author rank too.   The quality of articles is more important than the frequency.  I've seen people with just a handful get 100%, but that can slip if the account is basically abandoned.

I'm not on the Wizzley team, so this is largely educated speculation based on watching how the algorithm works.  I hope it's useful though.

Thanks, Jo! It seems this place is like the others then where unless you are contributing on a very regular basis you do not do so well! I admit I haven't posted much here for the past week or so and the Adsense problem wasn't encouraging me to do so! I suppose I had better make an effort again or watch my rank go further downhill!

I brought this up in a post awhile back...but will never find it! I think lobobrandon had the same question?

It really has to do with MATH.

You've been posting many articles recently (which is good). New articles are never at 100% out of the gate. So here is the thing...

If you only had 10 articles up, but they were all 100% and doing great, you would be at 100%.

BUT (yep, here's the math)

If you threw 20 more articles into the mix in the past few weeks, that start out at about 47% rank until they ripen for all of those things Jo mentioned, you've temporarily pulled your rank down..saturated it. Now your rank is the AVERAGE of 30 articles, with 20 of them being rather low.

It will come up on its own as the new articles mature...so bottom line is, don't worry about it...but keep it in mind if you are going to do a mass posting of new articles!

Also, due to averages, putting 20 up if you already have 300 articles won't make a large dent like someone putting 20 up who only has 30 to begin with.

Hope this helps explain it. It will come up again, absolutely. You just have a lot of new material up there right now.

Thanks for explaining though I am still somewhat confused because in the short time I have been here I have seen that on days when I posted several new Wizzles my position went up in the authors and I was even on the front page at one point. Also when I first started here I wondered what all this percentage business was about but found that the more I published the more it went up and was delighted the day I hit 100%.

Hi Steve,

as Robin said: don't worry too much about it. It's an internal ranking system that doesn't affect your visibility in Google.

Contributing on a regular basis is not so much a factor for our internal ranking system. Social interaction (comments) and social bookmarking (FB, Twitter, Google+, etc.) are much more important because Google sees these as signs of authority.

I'm sure you'll climb up again.  Smile

(Hint: a few Wizzley and Facebook "Likes" from your fellow Wizzleyans may help. Y'all hear?)
