banner on wordpress blog

As I learn more about this platform I love it more and I'd like to share it with others. There is a great selection of banners - now I just have to learn how to apply them.

I have a new wordpress blog (something else to get a handle on) and I want to put the referral banner on the sidebar. I found the widgets I can add and the only one that looked appropriate for this task was the text widget. I don't know if that's right. And besides, for some reason the widget wouldn't stick. Is there a limit to how many widgets basic bloggers can put on?

I should probably be asking there - but I can't handle getting familiar with more than one forum community at a time. So can someone who knows the wordpress site help me with this?

Is it a wordpress.com blog or a self-hosted blog?

Did you click "Save" within the widget?

What banner code did you enter?

It is a wordpress.com blog.

I don't even get to "save" as the text widget refuses to stay in place - I could only open it if it was with the other widgets I want to use, but it won't stick there - it just slips back into the main list. Is this clear?

In other words, I don't even get to the stage where I can paste the banner code.

When you drag a text widget into the desired sidebar you sometimes need to "wiggle" it around a bit until the dotted outline of the placeholder appears. Are there already other widgets in the same sidebar? 

Got it!  The problem was that the text widgit is so low down on the page that I didn't see that I wasn't putting into the box that wasn't visible on my screen. You telling me to wiggle got me to wiggle harder and I just succeeded.  The banner looks really good there on the the blog.
