Stern stuff!
As an ex English teacher I try to avoid all of these, but I "may" ( mistake #8) slip sometimes....though I was very annoyed when someone ( not on Wizzley) left me a message saying that my "grammer" was wrong! ( it wasn't!) Whitemoss (sue) on Wizzley and whitemoss on Squidoo

That page has the best explanation for using "who" and "whom" that I have seen. I actually understand it now! Of course remembering it is another story. It's a perfect page to keep for reference - how do you find these things?? |

I have an excellent book on these words.. It lists them in alphabetical order, and you can look them up quickly. I've got to run right now, but I'll post it later. Brenda Reeves

Ok, here it is: The Wordwatchers guide to Good Writing & Grammar by Morton S. Freeman You can look up all of those words and more in mere seconds. I consider it a must have for any writer's library.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sometimes confused with some of these words. If I may add, it's not just grammar we should be worried about. There are others such as fluff, spelling... This is great...but now let's start a thread on contractions! I see this all of the time... Your vs you're (you are) Its vs it's (it is) Jim the hubby has a PhD in education, but also BA in English and Master's in ESL...yes, I married my editor! haha....and I need his editing quite often! However, I was the spelling bee champion in elementary school, so sometimes he asks ME a question! In 2009 we sold everything and hit the road! Follow us on our blog at Cheap RV Living

frugalrvers: 12/14/2012 - 06:53 PM there, they're, their... then vs than. Wizzleys forum is the first forum I've been to that doesn't have this type of spelling. It's quite a relief to be able to read comments without getting hung up on those kind of errors. But I'm not perfect either. Up until recently, I've had issues with "a lot" vs "alot". No idea why. Being Swedish, with English as second language, I often wish I could just plug in and learn the English language flawlessly - Matrix-style. |
