I don't use it because my reply is inserted above the comment I am replying to and not below and indented that would make it clear that I was replying to that particular person.
Whether you leave the order of comments from last to first or change the order from first to last (while showing only the latest 5 comments), it would be much easier to follow if replies to specific comments were indented.

Wouldn't it be obvious that your leaving a comment when your name is on the article as the author with a picture and any other reply won't be that person? I'm not sure how this doesn't work. (although aesthetically I like the indention idea like they do in the HP forum... it's pretty pimp :)

It's not always obvious since the reply to the comment comes ABOVE the comment and, therefore, is read before the comment, itself. In order to make that clear, you have to mention the commenter's names in your reply, something I remembered to do when replying on the article, itself, rather than on my dashboard when approving the comment.

I consider using peoples names in a reply polite anyway- proticol but polite- it addresses people like people not a figure online, the @so and so is the most common way. What if you set your comments to load in ascending order rather than decending, then all comments would be in order- personally, however, I like the last to first on mine. I think the problem with indenting the comments is screen real-estate- they have to watch every pixel to assure the site doesn't look funny... but perhaps Simon could make replies a different background shade to show author and reader respectively :)

maybe it's the tired brain but ... huh? what new feature? what message? lol I'm as confused as a long tail cat trying to figure out how to run out of the room full of rocking chairs without hitting his tail once :)

Funny enough, I myself - developer of this new feature - have just recently completely confused answering to a comment with answering to a message. I though I was answering to a message, but it was a public comment :-P Maybe we should make this a bit more distinguished :-D
