How HPE Is Changing The Way We Live With Smart Tech

by RobertKeith

The internet of things is beginning to change how the world works.

Technology is playing such an increasing role in everyday life that you can say that every city is now more hi-tech than it once was, yet the places where most of us work and live are still light years from being smart. Thanks to mane unique partnerships this is becoming more of a reality every day.

To understand how this evolution is possible, you have to begin with discussing LoRaWAN based inter-city management.

Technology is playing such an increasing role in everyday life that you can say that every city is now more hi-tech than it once was, yet the places where most of us work and live are still light years from being smart. Thanks to a collaboration between Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Tata Communications, Jamshedpur, India is rapidly becoming one of the region’s first truly smart cities. To understand how this evolution is possible, you have to begin with discussing LoRaWAN based inter-city management.

What is it?

Long range, low power (LoRa), functionality, which wouldn’t be possible without LoRaWAN technology, is enabling us to make Jamshedpur a smarter city. Due to the flexibility with which a low power wide area network (LPWAN) operates, it will be the system used to connect everything from LTE to Wi-Fi. The success of the project will be driven by our deployment of LoRaWAN, a technology that has incredible functionality and vast range.

Who will be involved?

The announcement that Tata Communications had chosen Hewlett-Packard's Universal IoT (UIoT) Platform to integrate buildings, campuses, utilities, fleet management, security and healthcare services across more than 2,000 communities was made at the Mobile World Congress back in February. We’re in the process of working with Jamshedpur Utility Services Company (JUSCO), a subsidiary of Tata, to develop Jamshedpur’s Command Center.

How will the Smart City Command Center be used?

The Smart City Command Center will not only optimize utility operations, it will integrate data into one interface that JUSKO will maintain and monetize. Two main goals will be to reduce their ecological footprint and make construction sites safer. Less power consumption and lower energy costs are also anticipated, but the journey to dramatically modernize Jamshedpur will be positive in countless other ways. Its development from a traditional steel to the fully digitized smart city has just begun and will proceed for the next 12-18 months until all relevant sub-systems are integrated into the Hewlett-Packard UIoT Platform. We anticipate numerous other benefits upon its completion.

JUSCO’s role will be to assemble and aggregate a broad spectrum of data that it will also manage. More than 100,000 sensors and gateways will be upgraded into new infrastructure solutions that will include street lights, utilities and parking meters, all of which will be managed using the UIoT Platform.

Imagining the future

Hewlett-Packard and Tata Communications are building upon these bold steps forward to lead the way towards a smarter future. Jamshedpur is work-in-progress that will be an ongoing showcase for how technology can improve everyone’s quality of life. Our daily needs are evolving at a pace at which technology now has the capacity to meet. We believe that our in-house talent and drive is uniquely qualified to provide the right solutions. Expect to see new breakthroughs from us as we continue to work together to unveil cutting edge ideas and launch projects on a scale never seen before.

We encourage you to take part in the journey towards this exciting new vision to make Jamshedpur a city that will be a model for others.
