Draw A Cartoon Dragon

How to draw a Cartoon Dragon idea. Here we have one possible idea although I didn't draw any wings on it this time around, but really the idea is there to be followed and be inspired by. As usual with other cartoon drawing tutorials like Drawing a Cat and Sketching a Dog we have step by step images to follow every step of the way and I'll have a video link which you can pause all the steps that way if you wish too.

With Dragons you can take a lot of inspiration from real life reptiles particularly Lizards and you can also use a Dogs head (The ones with a long face!) or even a Horsees head as a reference for the shape of your imaginative Dragons head. When you start to draw in a Cartoon art style you leave out lots of detail and just focus on the design if you can and this step by step drawing tutorial will give you a few pointers.

Below, we start off sketching a few lines and shapes for the head and body and then we crack on with the drawing process, take a look....

Pushing On With The Dragon Design

Sketching Dragon Details

Eyes and all the other things that make up the Dragon can be sketched at any stage and you can add and refine the shapes of your Dragon head and body as you go along. Darkening the pencil lines help make them look clearer so you can ink them later on.

Draw Over Your Drawing With An Ink Pen

Ink Your Dragon Art

I always use Gel ink pens because they are also affordable and simple to use. The ink usually flows good although over certain pencil types it clogs them, but generally speaking they are still good ink pens to use. But Sharpies are cool to ink with and they come in all shapes of tips from fine to broad tip and they are permanent too if you fancy drawing on a different surface other than paper.

When it comes to the inking stage, I don't like to add too much detail on a Cartoon drawing as then it will look like a comic book drawing or something more complicated. Instead just try to improve the pencil lines on the inking stage because once you've inked it, that's it! You'll have to live with it.

The Coloring Process

Color With Colored Pencils The Crayola Twistables

Here I have colored my Dragon idea with Crayola Twistables as they are cheap and therefore a good reason to buy them. They are great for using blending techniques with the color range and you only need a few of them to do this Dragon!

  • A Dark Green for the skin
  • A light Green for the skin
  • And a Yellow for the highlights on the skin.

Of course there are other colors of Dragon that you could consider so don't feel limited in any way, because there are Red Dragons, Purple Dragons and even ones with Polka Dots on them I'm sure! The way you draw and color these Cartoon Dragons is entirely up to you in the end as this may only inspire you to draw and then there's no stopping you from then on.

Draw something Cartoony today! It's Fun, I promise!

The first subheading, Draw a cartoon design, directs us to "real life reptiles particularly Lizards."

That paragraph also gives as additional inspirations dog and horse heads.

Is that your invention or is there a tradition of dragons incorporating canine and equine features?
