Is your child going on a sleepover at a friend's house and wants to take everything with them? Let's take a look at what they really need and then how to pack for a sleepover!

If your child is left to their own devices when it comes to packing for a sleepover the bag may be bursting at the seams! So let's take a look at how to pack for a sleepover.

Sleepovers can be really fun for children but they can be a little bit stressful for parents. A child's first sleepover is his or her first foray into independence, perhaps the first time he or she sleeps in someone else's home.

If this is your child's first sleepover you may feel anxious about what to prepare, how to pack and how to make sure that your child has everything he or she needs. Here are some tips on how to pack the perfect sleepover bag for your child.

Essentials For The Sleepover Packing List

The first thing you need to do when creating your sleepover packing list is to identify the basic items that you need to pack for your child.

These includes a water or milk bottle, medications if there are any, his or her favorite blanket or teddy bear, as well as a change of clothes. You can pack one set of pajamas, clean underwear, socks, toothbrush and a comb.

If your child has a special book or story that he reads before bed, you can pack that too. It is important to pack the items that provide a sense of comfort for the child, especially if this is the child's first time so that there is a minimal change from the routine at home.

Clothes For The Sleepover Packing List

Once you have taken care of the essentials that they will need, as mentioned above, then you need to determine the activities that are planned for the duration of your child's stay and pack accordingly.

For example, if swimming is a planned activity or if the kids are expected to play around outdoors before they go to bed, you may need to pack a towel, an extra set of clothes or bathing suits. Sunblock and swimming gear may also be packed when needed.

You can ask the other parents what activities they are planning for the kids so you can include the needed items in your child's sleepover bag. For special occasions, you may need to add other items as well. Check the invitation to see if you need to pack other items, like gifts, costumes or toys.

Will They Need A Sleepover Sleeping Bag?

You may need to consider, or ask, whether you need to pack a sleepover sleeping bag for your child to take with them.

Although it is not unusual for parents to provide beds for the children during sleepovers, you can always pack a small sleeping bag in case there are no beds.

A sleeping bag that your child uses regularly is also useful for reducing the anxiety that comes with sleeping in an unfamiliar bed.

A sleeping bag comes in handy if the kids are allowed to sleep outdoors. An outdoor sleepover party, where the kids can sleep in tents, is a popular way for parents to make the usual sleepover party for their children more fun.

Choosing The Best Sleepover Bag For Them To Take With Them

When it comes to choosing what bag they should take with them then I would suggest that you use one bag for all the items and place each item in separate containers for better organization.

This makes it easier for the other parents to locate your child's things. Medications, extra food and milk can be placed in one container, such as a Ziplock bag. Toiletries can be placed in another bag. You can place the toys and boys in another container.

You can also include an empty plastic bag for your child's worn clothes or bathing suit. You can even label each container for better organization. Just make sure to use a large, spacious bag to leave room for the folded blankets, pillows, and larger toys.

Most sleeping bags now have Velcro straps that allow you to fold it and carry like a small shoulder bag or backpack so you wouldn't have to put it inside the sleepover bag.

Prepare For The Sleepover

Don't forget that as well as getting everything ready for your child to go to their sleepover you also need to help the parents.  So make sure to leave phone numbers with the other parents.

It is important to leave your phone numbers with the parents who have your child for the night. This way you can be reached at any hour for any questions or in case of emergencies. It is also important that you leave a note containing the things that the host parents may need to know, such as a list of food allergies or the schedule for his bedtime.

It is important to note that a child's first sleepover can be stressful for both parents and child. Be prepared for any phone calls of your child wanting to come home. Although most children go through their first sleepovers without any problems, there are some who may feel too anxious and want to come home.

You can take your child home to save everyone the trouble. However, you can reduce the chances of this happening by thinking ahead and packing everything your child needs for an easy and fun sleepover.
