What is the cause of Acne?

Acne or pimples or spots or zits or cyst pimple or acne vulgaris - there are many names - but what are they? They are the lesions on the skin which are usually unslightly and can give a kick to the sufferer's self esteem and confidence! What directly causes the skin problem is not known for sure! But it boils down to the one thing.....the skin has billions of pores, when these pores get blocked with oil and bacteria and skin debris, the result is clogged pores which causes Acne!

To go into more detail, each pore has a hair follicle through which the hair strand grows, there are also sebaceous glands (or sebum glands) here, these are responsible for producing sebum a natural oil that the skin produces for lubrication. When the body goes out of whack e.g. when stressed or hormone change during puberty, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum then needed. This sebum then blocks the pore together with the skins natural debris such as skin cells causing a clogged pore. Bacteria that are naturally present on the surface of the skin, begin to multiply in the blocked pore causing the inflammed "spot".

There are two types of the "clogged pores":

Whiteheads - where the pore is almost completely blocked, and
Blackheads - where the pore is not completely blocked but looks like a black dot, this is due to the oxidation of melanin.

No matter how severe the acne problem is, there are solutions.

Back Acne

Again this is caused by clogged pores but exactly why the sebaceous glands produce more sebum (oil) is not known for sure! It is something that is seen during and after puberty. Although cause is same for back acne as for facial acne, it is believed that because the back gets covered with clothing there is a higher likelihood that pores will get clogged as sweat cannot evaporate as easily. Also there is more chance that things - clothing, backpacks etc will rub against the back thus increasing the risk of clogged pores.

Treatment for Back Acne

So how do you prevent Back Acne?

Here are a few tips:

Cleanse your body, the back gets sweaty and with tight clothing restricting air flow there is more likelihood of pore blockage. Cleansing twice a day is recommended.

Apply toner after cleansing. Toners reduce oil production and balance the skin's pH therefore reducing the risk of blocked pores.

Exfoliate your back two or three times a week.Use a body scrub or loofah to get rid of dead skin cells and clean the pores of dirt which can cause blockage.

Wear loose fitting cotton clothing to help your skin breathe and avoid sweat accumulation in the affected areas. Synthetic clothing can trap sweat allowing bacterial growth.

How to get rid of Acne Scars

Acne Scars a unpleasant reminders of Acne. There are many types of Acne Scars and which one remains after an inflammation (Acne) has healed depends on how deep the damage to the skin caused by the inflammation was. Common acne scar types include:

Rolling Acne Scars - usually soft, shallow and wide

Boxcar Acne Scars - these are visible as huge open pores, usually seen on the cheeks

Ice Pick Acne Scars - formed by deep narrow pits in the skin

Hypertrophic and Keloid Acne Scars - these are usually firm and rubbery mass of tissue usually formed by the more severe form of Acne.

Because Acne Scars are essentially damaged skin, left alone without treatment they are likely to reduce as the newer healthier skin comes to the surface. This can take a long time depending on how fast the skin renews (top layer sheds off) naturally. With some great products available today, it is possible to get rid of the top layer of skin. The products are of two types - Microdermabraison and Chemical Peels. Done regularly the newer healthier skin will come up to the surface sooner. Until recently, the process of removing the top layer of skin was only available at the Spa or Salon but there are now over the counter products available that are cheaper and allow the treatment to be done at home. As with all chemical treatments it is imperative that you consult a doctor to make sure it is the right treatment for you! There is help with Acne Scars!

Treating Acne Scars by laser is supposed to be quicker! Would you pick laser treatment over treatment using gels, creams etc because it is quicker even though there are some serious risks, such as skin burning?
