Waffles are quick and easy, and as a snack, they can be as mundane or exciting as the cook who experiments with them. These recipes will get you started, but could you keep us updated about your experiments? Likewise, this article will evolve as ideas develop and in response to requests for more ideas.
Savoury Waffle Journal

I was asked by. to write an article about savoury waffles. Savoury Waffles will be updated with a review as each recipe is tested.
Savoury Chickpea Flour Waffles
Pakora Waffles
It was not until Richa mentioned it, did I realise that waffles are not deep fried. Their not even fried at all for that matter. I love fritters, but that requires frying, where as my stand up waffle maker only requires a light spray of coconut oil.
Richa describes Pakora Waffles as a savoury vegan breakfast treat or snack that has been a staple at most Indian restaurants.
You can find the recipe on her versatile website called Vegan Richa. Because Richa's website offers a vegan alternative. This recipe is gluten-free, soy free, nut-free and high protein. It suggests chickpea flour with plenty of veggie goodness and spices added
Chopped cauliflower, bell pepper, chopped onion, hot green chili finely chopped, fresh ginger minced, carom(ajwain) seeds or cumin seed, turmeric, cayenne, rice flour, chickpea flour all come together for a spicy feast,.
How the upright waffle maker works will be described further in the next article.

Using Sour Dough Cast Off
Don't throw out the waste from you sour dough - make waffles instead
When you experiment with sour dough, you will find that there is quite a bit of discard that can be repurposed. Read about it here - How to Make a Sourdough Starter from Scratch. Discard is the unfed starter that you take out before feeding the sour dough starter. Use the discard to bake waffles to die for. You can of course make pizza bases and the like. feedback about any recipes you bake would be welcome. Some people make biscuits and there seems to be no limit to the ways this material can be repurposed. Consider feeding the sourdough starter at night so you can whip up the sour dough waffles in the morning.
Savoury toppings
Some times they ARE the spice and sometimes they help us cool the spice down
Of the 28 recipes in the post 28 Best Waffle Toppings (Savoury & Sweet) I have chosen.
- Ricotta & mixed seeds
- Hummus & sprouts
- Cream cheese
- Bean chilli
- Avocado and sour cream
- Mango chutney
Once I have created these toppings I will let you know how it goes in a review. How about you? What will you choose to experiment with? Are you up for the challenge?
What is your favourite savoury topping?
Toppings make all the difference
Corn waffles, ham shavings and simple green salad
Breakfast or midday snack
Sweet corn has a milky sweet taste, both on the cob and as kernels. When making waffles with canned corn smart chefs either use creamed corn or corn kernels. Creamed corn will produce a smooth silky texture, while corn kernels will produce little bombs of taste that softened by cooking will explode in your mouth.
I keep all recipes simple
- 1 egg
- 1/4/cup milk
- salt, turmeric, cracked pepper to taste
- coconut oil spray
- 1/2 tsp of baking powder
- half a cup of flour (make sure mixture is runny and pourable)
- Sour cream (once waffles are cooked).
Cook waffles as shown in the introduction of this article.
Once cooked, lay a simple green salad out on the plate and arrange the waffles beside.
Enjoy this extremely simple recipe. It is quick, easy, no fuss and hardly any cleanup.

Do you have any extra tips?
Here's one.
In an upright waffle maker, it is easy to over-fill.
Use the left over chunks of half cooked dough.
The one pictured is a banana waffle. Now this cast off dough can be kneaded to become dumplings cooked in caramel sauce. Add icecream and a little vanilla yoghurt.
Ingredients Caramel sauce
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 42Tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp salt (not too muc)h
- 1/2 cup half of milk
- vanilla to tase
Viola - perfect desert.

No! I am in the middle of the festival season. As soon as I can, I will get writing again.
Thanks for asking
Your comment Jan. 3, 2024, advised us your day-before sweet waffle-making.
A broken title link kept you from a Sweet waffle wizzley at the time.
Might such a catastrophe prevent your ever writing such a wizzley?
Your poll asks, What is your favourite savoury topping?
It considers "other" even as it features avocado, cheesy, chili, hummus and spicy mince.
Spicy mince draws me because Ragnar Jónasson enumerates it among Icelandic drinks and eats.
Hummus emerges because of occasional unavailability of some ingredients. Boar's Head features hummus variants among its products. Their products heralded Thanksgiving fun for a Boar's Head hummus meal of chicken main-course, artichoke and spinach side-course, lemon fruit-course and dark-chocolate dessert-course dips and spreads.
But they might offput, outnumber cheese, leek and vegetable toppers or cracked pepper, paprika, salt and turmeric might offput or outnumber them.
So homemade hummus tempts me because of possible amount adjustments.
Would you happen to have a family, homemade recipe for waffle-friendly hummus or in fact family, homemade recipes for avocado, cheesy, chili, spicy mince toppings?
I tried to change this article to include sweet waffles as I made one yesterday. I broke the title link and quickly backed out!
I am going to spend 7 days with my sister
We can experiment and journal
Sprouts are seperate
The computer crashed before I completed my comment concerning hummus.
Your topping suggestions enter the hummus option as hummus and sprouts.
Might the sprouts be part of the hummus-making or something added afterward, before serving?
The hummus topping appeals to me.
The grocery store only carries off-putting Boar's Head hummus.
Might you have a hummus recipe?
I would drink a mint drink. I have bought a kombucha kit. I will journal this process, too.
A plain waffle goes very nicely with sliced cucumber, sharp cheddar, tomatoes and zucchini. Next time I intend to try avocado sauce.
Such a recipe prompts my saying from my childhood, J'ai bien mangé, J'ai bien bu, J'ai la peau du ventre bien tendue, Merci petit Jésus (et petite Jo)! (literally "I ate well, I drank well, I have the skin over my stomach well stretched, Thank you sweet Jesus [and Jo]!").
My drink was herbal tea. What would you serve with the above dish?
Correcto!
I am making my way back to this article
I just cooked lasagna and kept some of the sauces for the waffles
