Tycoon games like Rollercoaster Tycoon are a large passion of mine, I love jumping into a theme park, business or some form of other management role and making all the decisions. I've put together this list for people like me who are on the hunt for a list of the best tycoon games.

My love for this sort of genre actually started with SimCoaster when I was younger but after being introduced to RCT instead I was also hooked on that series. I started my RCT adventure with the very first Rollercoaster Tycoon and continued all the way through the series, loving each new addition and expansion pack that came with it.

Prison Architect

One Of My Favourite Games Like Rollercoaster Tycoon

While it's still in Early Access (on Steam) I really like what Prison Architect is bringing to the table in the tycoon/management genre. I do find it to be one of my favourite games like Rollercoaster Tycoon even though it doesn't have the theme park theme, choosing the more serious setting of a maximum security prison.

With control of the prison you'll have to build everything you would expect from cells to facilities. Staff will also need to be hired and you'll have to keep your prisoners safe from the outside and themselves. The entire prison is up to you to design with players starting with a completely empty plot of land (just like in RCT).

Why the game really attracted me is the choice between how you design and run your prison. You can be tough and have all sorts of super maximum security features or try to rehabilitate your prison population instead. Every prisoner is there own person (as they should be) with their own life story that is randomly generated to keep you on your toes.

Theme Hospital

One Of The Classic Games Like Rollercoaster Tycoon

Like many gamers I have a love affair with Theme Hospital, it's one of the classic Bullfrog tycoon games like Rollercoaster Tycoon and lets you take control as your own hospital (as the name probably suggests). If you want to return to the roots of the very genre I would say that Theme Hospital offers that.

The game is management sim than tycoon game so the appeal definitely isn't for everyone but there is more than enough depth if you take the leap into the hospital theme. The game is also packed full of fun humour elements that make the game a strange experience (something you'll know well if you've played previous Bullfrog games).

Your job is to create and maintain your own hospital while trying to compete against other hospitals. From designing rooms, to hiring staff to testing new medicines you have complete control.Prove you got the great management skills needed in this fun and quite possibly best tycoon game meets management sim.

My Fantastic Park

One Of The Few Free Games Like Rollercoaster Tycoon

Everybody loves free to play games and I'm no exception so I decided that I had to find at least one game that would be worth inclusion here. After trying several free games like Rollercoaster Tycoon I settled on My Fantastic Park as the best option.

It won out over the other option I tried (Carnival Tycoon) because it was really easy to start playing and I could see right away that there was heaps of depth to explore (I'm still playing My Fantastic Park a month later!) For a game of this type that's the longest I've ever committed to a game.

The game is sort of like the many popular Facebook games (FarmVille, CityVille, etc.) in design with players placing buildings, gaining resources and having to carefully manage their time. The graphics right out of the gate are amazing and as I continue to upgrade the rides in my park I'm continually impressed with the graphic direction that the game takes.

I really consider the game to be RCT for your browser (and free) as the focus is definitely on building up an amazing theme park and then attracting appropriate visitors to make your money back and fund further expansion. Upjers, the developer of the game also has a really good collection of similar games (like My Free Zoo) if you want the same experience but in a different setting.
