A kid-proof digital camera for children aged 3+ Read the review and get the best price
Most children are fascinated with digital cameras and will do anything to get their hands on one which is why the Vtech Kidizoom digital camera is such a great toy for Christmas. My daughter is only one but she is obsessed with my camera and cries if I won’t give it to her –obviously I am reluctant to do so in case she breaks it! The Vtech Kidizoom digital camera however, is specially designed for kids from as young as 3 years with simple operation and hardwearing body so you don’t need to worry about them throwing it around

Vtech Kidizoom Digital Camera Review
Kids love taking photographs and are fascinated that they can take a picture of themselves and see it on the screen afterwards. Traditional digital cameras are delicate and not designed for children – they are easily broken by being dropped or just a bit of rough handling and the small buttons can be difficult for child-size hands to control.
Both the Kidizoom Spin & Smile Digital Camera and the standard version are designed with large rounded rubber grips on either side, making it easy to hold on to. The buttons are large and intuitive so that even very young children can figure out how to use the camera quickly. Another great feature is the dual viewfinder, allowing both eyes to look through at the same time as small children often have difficulty closing one eye to use a single viewfinder.
When it comes to sturdiness, the Vtech kidizoom is not indestructible but you certainly don’t need to worry about it being dropped or chucked in a box along with the rest of your child’s toys. There is also an auto-off feature which can be really handy as children rarely remember to switch things off when they’re finished playing with them.
Another great thing about this camera for kids is the included games and special effects. The basic version includes 3 games and the spin and smile 5. They both have on-screen software included allowing the user to add cartoon effects and borders. There is also a video editor which can be used to distort voices, making them sound like a robot or super high pitched – hours of rainy day entertainment!
The internal storage is enough for up to 200 photos and the Vtech kidizoom Spin & Smile camera has an SD card slot if additional storage is needed. They can also of course be uploaded to a computer when the internal memory is full. The batteries also last a long time – up to about 8 hours of use.
The main disadvantage of this camera is the quality of the photographs. Obviously this is a digital camera intended for use by children as a toy and so you should not expect professional quality photographs but this may be a consideration for some people. You’re not going to get high-print-quality pictures using this camera and they may be a little grainy or blurry, especially in low light. The recommended age for this toy is from 3-15 years but older children from about 12 who have some experience with using digital cameras already will probably be better off with a standard basic camera rather than this toy version.

The Vtech kidizoom plus digital camera and Vtech kidizoom digital camera 2010 version are older models and are discontinued. They are still available from 3rd party retailers on Amazon but are no cheaper than the new versions and have lower specifications (no video!) so I would recommend you buying either the standard 2011 Kidizoom digital camera or the kidizoom spin & smile which is the updated version of the kidizoom plus and features a higher resolution, an SD card slot and a rotating lens for taking self portraits.
