What Happened to Ted the Caver

by NateB11

Ted the Cavers blog abruptly ended after its descriptions of terrifying paranormal experiences were described. So, what happened?

Back in December 2000, a man started a blog about his caving expeditions. The blog chronicles the adventures to and within a particular cave over a period of several months, abruptly ending somewhere in the middle of 2001.

The story goes that Ted and a friend he refers to as “B”, go down to this area in a cave network where they find a small hole in a cave from which wind is blowing out. This intrigues the men, because among cavers if wind comes from a hole, it’s worth exploring. It should be stated that the adventure to this area itself took great effort; they had to grapple to it by rope. This becomes important later on.

The men find they will have to make the hole bigger if they are going to go beyond it and explore further. They also find themselves hearing a strange rumbling sound coming from the hole.

Basically it takes many trips over several months for them to open up the hole. It’s a difficult process, let’s just say that. While working on the hole, the men at various times experience weird occurrences. They hear a scraping sound at some point, the wind stops blowing at other points and at one time they even hear a terrifying scream that Ted describes as  half human and half animal. When they bring B’s dog along, the animal doesn’t even want to get near the hole.

Finally the hole is big enough for Ted to fit through; he eventually inches his way into an open space past the passage from the hole and sees a strange drawing on the wall and a room with a big rock sitting next to it. He gets weird feelings. They name the newly found cave Floyd’s Tomb.

On another trip, he takes pictures. Only pictures of the passageway come out, not the ones in the room. Another time they bring a friend named Joe. Joe explores Floyd’s Tomb and comes running back out with scratches on his arms and face and looking pale as a ghost.

At the climax of this story, Ted brings a video camera and a two-way phone to further explore. He is going to another passage in Floyd’s Tomb when he starts feeling like he’s being followed. He begins to hear those strange sounds again, including the scraping sound. He tries to call B but can’t get through.

He quickly runs out toward the entrance they’d made (the hole) and sees the drawing on the wall glowing and that the rock next to the room had moved; revealing a big hole. The rock is on the line connecting the phones. Ted felt at this point like he was being chased by demons.

He gets out of Floyd’s Tomb and he and B make their escape, feeling their rope being pulled from behind them.

Ted has scratches on himself like Joe did before.

After this last incident, Ted begins to have nightmares, can’t eat or sleep, has to take time off from work, and begins to see and hear strange things in his home.

Compelled to leave home one night, he goes to a spot overlooking the city where, turns out, Joe has also come to. The two decide they both want to go back to the cave.

Ted informs B of this decision.

Ted’s last entry is hopeful about going back to the cave and he says he’ll take a knife and gun this time. However, this is the last entry and we never find out what happens, in spite of the fact that Ted tells us that he will tell us how it goes.

What Happened?

So, a lot of people wonder what happened to Ted. Turns out he’s fine. He is a real caver that started a blog for friends to keep them informed of his adventure, but he decided to embellish the story a bit for fun. Much of the blog is true, he really did explore Floyd’s Tomb, a real cave in American Fork, Utah, and he took actual pictures of the adventure that were included in the blog.

He revealed all of this, and a friend of his, Ralph E. Powers, backed up his story, on a forum for the National Speleological Society.

So, Ted is alive and well and has said he loves the fact that his story became so popular.

You have done well to reveal the truth. I don't think that anyone should present paranormal tales as true unless they genuinely think they are. In this situation non-cavers with a taste for the mysterious and thinking that the tale was true might have been drawn down the cave into situations that they could not handle and lives could have been lost. Furthermore, when we discuss the paranormal we need to know that what we are discussing is truthful. Thanks.
