by Gardenbella

Is your lawn mower doing a good job? If not, perhaps it is time to select a new machine that will get the job done faster and easier.

Summers always bring the sound of a lawn mowers early in the morning. Usually Saturday or Sunday mornings. It seems that these are the days people get out to work in your yard and the neighborhood becomes alive with the sound of their engines.

Yes, if you have a lawn you probably have a need to mow it. However, is your machine doing a good job or does it make the job harder? If the answer is no, it is not doing a good job, then maybe this is the year to decide on getting a new one but there are a few things to take into consideration first.

It is always a good idea to compare lawn mowers. You want to make sure that the features they have to offer are what you need to cut your particular lawn. Also you shouldn’t just choose a mower based on the price tag. This way you won't be affected by the price and as a result you can then take into consideration what you need. Cutting your lawn correctly should be the goal and then you can determine if you want to pay the price tag for the mower.

Lawn mowers are made of different materials so you can choose from plastic, aluminum or stainless steel. Of course the best ones are made of stainless steel but their price tag is generally more than a plastic or aluminum one

How to Mow Your Lawn

In order to take good care of your lawn, don't cut more than one-third of the grass leaf. Leaving the grass long reduces water needs but more importantly helps it absorb sunshine for photosynthesis. Any shorter and the sun could burn the grass too.

Always check to make sure there aren't any branches or debris lying around either before your start mowing. Not only could it cause a hazard with flying debris, but it could damage the blades of your lawn mower.

Always cut your lawn when it is dry. Most experts will tell you that leaving the grass clippings on the lawn, although not often pleasant to look at, helps to return nutrients to the soil.

Also, vary the direction that the lawn is mowed. You might mow horizontally one week and then the next vertically or even diagonally. This is beneficial for the health for the grass blades.

Machine Maintenance

It is important to keep you lawn mower blades sharp, otherwise they won't cut the grass well and will instead rip or tear at the grass which makes the plants susceptible to pests. Get the blades sharpened professionally once a year, usually at the beginning of the mowing cycle.

It is not unusual for grass clippings to get stuck around the spark plug. If you remove the lead from the engine you can hose around it to remove any grass that is stuck to the deck. This way the engine won't overheat.

Also at the beginning of grass cutting season, have a tune-up and do a safety inspection. If you have a lawn mower that uses oil you will want to change it every 50 hours or so and the air filter every 25 hours. Always use the right fuel and put it in the same container so as not to mix it up with other fuels.

The best place to get answers regarding your mower is in the maintenance manual. If you have lost your manual you can always go online and download a new one.

Buying a Riding Lawn Mower

If you have a large piece of property and a large lawn to maintain, buying a riding lawn mower is probably a good idea. They have a lot of power and will make light work of a very big job.

These machines tend to be pretty big, so make sure you have enough room in your garage or shed to store them when they are not in use. You will need to put them under cover so they don't get rusty or damaged by weather.

They come with either the engine in the back or in the front. While the one with the engine in the front is generally a more powerful machine, it is often hard to see what is ahead of you when you are mowing the lawn.

Riding mowers come with speed controls such as a gear lever, foot pedal controls and clutch and a brake. You have a lot more control over the operation of the lawn more but they tend to be more expensive but are certainly easier to operate.

A regular push lawn mower can range in price from around $200 to $500 where as a conventional riding lawn mower can cost upwards for $1500. Some can get even pricier and reach as high $7,000 or $8,000. There is also maintenance costs and gasoline to consider.
