3 ways to make your old furniture look like new again

If you're furniture is looking a little worse for wear then these three tips can make it fresher again,

Ideally, we all want to own stellar furniture that makes our spaces cool and edgy. However, in reality, you might be stuck with using that old couch from your mom or that dining table from the 90’s. Since we all can’t have what we wish for, it is best to make good of what we’ve got. Instead of throwing out that old furniture simply because it is clamping your style, here are three ways through which you can make it look new again.

1. Reupholster Antique Furniture

Most antique furniture is made from sturdy materials making it last long. However, the furniture’s fabric is not immune to wear and tear. The upholstery also tends to fade over time.

If that antique couch is still structurally sound but worn out or faded, then reupholstering should make it look brand new. You can choose to reupholster your antique furniture with classic materials such as leather or choose a vibrant colored fabric that matches the rest of your décor.

Reupholstering can be tricky especially if you have never done it before. The process requires some specialized equipment which you might not have at your disposal. Therefore, it is best to contact professional upholstery restorers to do the job for you. These professionals do a great job, and they can also recommend the best cushioning material and fabric for your furniture.

2. Refinish a Worn Surface

Some furniture such as dressers cannot be upholstered. Thus, a new trick is needed to restore them to their old glory.

Refinishing old furniture gives it a brand new look. You can also choose different colors and patterns for the new finishing job so that the piece matches the rest of your themed room.

Spray painting is the best way to refinish furniture since it is easier and gives the item a consistent color. Make sure you use paint that is meant for the surface you wish to refinish. There are different paints designed for wood and plastic. Other metal paints contain added elements to prevent corrosion.
In case you don’t have a spray painter, using an ordinary brush can also produce quality results.
3. Staining

Staining a piece of furniture can make it look completely different. Staining furniture is an easy task since all the materials needed are available at almost every hardware store.

Be sure to remove any paint or finishing product that may be covering your furniture so that you can work on the wood. Use a sand paper to remove any imperfections that might be left from the finish so that you are only left with a smooth wood surface. You can now apply the staining using as many layers as you like till you achieve the desired color.

After staining, cover the furniture with a coating of polyurethane to protect it from damage. You can apply this coating for two or three times for maximum protection.

Completing this process gives your furniture a brand new look and makes it last longer.
