A Discovery of Witches - A Vampire Romance for Adults
by NanLT
Historian and wine blogger, Deborah Harkness has written a supernatural tale of intrigue, magic and vampire romance for adults. "A Discovery of Witches" has been a real treasure.
What if....
Would they have jobs?
Historian Deborah Harkness asked this same question. And the resultant answer led to her first fiction book, A Discovery of Witches.
According to Harkness' biography she has been studying history for over 28 years, specifically researching the history of magic, alchemy, and science in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. She now teaches European history and the history of science at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In 2006 Harkness began blogging about a second interest of hers, wine. She has since won numerous awards for this blog.
A Discovery of Witches combines Deobrah Harkness' interests in history and wine and that passion clearly shows throughout.

A Brief Synopsis of A Discovery of Witches
All Soul's Trilogy Book 1
Historian Diane Bishop is trying to live a normal life as a normal human when in the midst of her studies of alchemical manuscripts she comes across one that has been missing for a very long time.
But Diane is no ordinary human and that is no ordinary manuscript. Diane is descended from a long line of very powerful witches; the manuscript, Ashmole 782, has been ensorcelled and hidden until the right person comes to claim it. As she is trying to deny her heritage, Diane sends the book back into the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, but that doesn't stop a range of otherworldly creatures from trying to get their hands on her, and on that manuscript. Something is contained within its pages and they want it!
Included amongst the mix of witches, vampires, and daemons is 1,500 year old vampire and geneticist Matthew Clairmont. He also has a desire to protect Diane from harm and over time they begin working together to discover the secrets contained within the manuscript.
The growing relationship developing between witch and vampire threaten the centuries old Congregation created between witch, vampire and daemon. A Congregation created to keep the fourth group of creatures - humans - from discovering the other three even exist. Enforcers within the Congregation will stop at nothing to keep Diane and Matthew apart, even if that means murder.
A Discovery of Witches is a tale of intrigue and romance. If you like vampire romances but are looking for something without the high school drama, then this is the book you're looking for.
Deborah Harkness has given us a unique glimpse into the hidden world of vampires, aided by her indepth knowledge of history, alchemy, science, magic, and fine wines. I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Discovery of Witches and look forward to reading Shadow of Night, the next book in Harkness' All Soul's Trilogy.

Have You Read A Discovery of Witches?
Oooh, now this is something I look forward to reading. Why haven't I heard of this before? I think I saw it once, but for some reason didn't pick it up - and I love this stuff! Well, now I am definitely adding this one to my reading list. Thank you for the wonderful review. History, magic, and a love between a powerful witch and mysterious, and wonderfully ancient, antique of a vampire is what my life's all about ;) lol
Well done review...not necessarily my type of reading material, but you've presented it well:-) The only vampires I ever had any "involvement" with were in the old TV series many years ago, Dark Shadows.
Very good review and nicely put together
Cool review. The book sounds interesting.
