Today I am finishing the job of clearing the affected bed, then I am digging up the potatoes, as they won;t grow after the plants are gone. But they will still be healthy and edible.

Indeed blight does still thrive! It hit the tomatoes in my area a few years ago. I've been growing mine in containers with fresh compost ever since, but in a really damp summer I imagine it could strike again.
