Earlier! The supposed historian Geoffrey of Monmouth, now deemed unreliable, invented the tale of a Cornish Arthur in the 1200s. Later on Richard,a prince who was brother of Henry the Third, promoted the legend. Richard was lord of Tintagel ...

Cornwall: England's most south-westerly county

Cornwall: England's most south-westerly county
frankbeswick, That's a most compelling and interesting reason. It passed me by, perhaps because of having read of repeat battles that have been represented more as power plays -- U.S. forces were doing better so they decided to take back ...

Lough Erne: one of Ireland's greatest lakes
Land in the north is held in the same way as land in Britain is, from the crown, but I do not know the rules for land in the south. Is seeing leprechauns creepy or reassuring? I do not know, but we must realize that in Irish myth the Sidhe, the ...

Lough Erne: one of Ireland's greatest lakes
frankbeswick, Thank you for the photos, practicalities and products. In another, more recent wizzley, you described the land in the United Kingdom as regarded as that of the monarchy at least since 1066. How did that affect the status of land ...

Cornwall: England's most south-westerly county
Hi Derdriu. Winds from the South East combine with currents to produce dangerous boating conditions in Cornish seas.Small fishing boats must be careful. I think that Arthur was from North Wales because we are told that Arthur fought several ...

And in the course of your extensive research I hoped you found that the Stockport family of Arderns who owned Bredbury Hall are descended from the medieval de Arderne family.? Note the de. And neither Warwickshire nor Saxon. Most Saxon lords ...

Stockport, Cheshire. Heritage Walk
I have done some research and discovered that there is an Ardern in Warwickshire, in the Midlands, but the Ardern family descend from the Saxon earls of Warwick. It is therefore an ancient Saxon lineage, not Norman.

Irish Halloween ( Samhain ) traditions
BSG An excellent point and one which needs reiterating. My parish priest has no problem with the children "celebrating " Halloween" which is after all a Christianisation of The Briton/ Gael feast of Samhain. The people aren't taking part in ...

BSG We are especially fortunate in Cheshire which has the most elaborately decorated black and white buildings. I am astonished with myself that I never took the time to explore the history of my hometown. It's beautiful, as you see.
