Before I moved to the desert and passed the age of 45 all I ever needed was soap and water. One day I became inspired by when my forehead showed signs of desert drying and after sun cream applications. I realized that it was not enough to simply wash, I needed to exfoliate! I managed to create a wonderful skin cleanser with ingredients in my garden and kitchen including the grounds from my morning coffee!
Best “Mud” Mask Ever: All Natural Ingredients
If your skin is sun damaged, excessively dry or if you suffer from a burning itch this recipe has a cooling tingle that can be soothing. The ingredients are great for your skin.
The combination of ingredients mixes well and makes the skin tingle. Portions are a matter of personal preference, but the staple ingredient is oatmeal.
- Ground or colloidal oatmeal, at least ¼ cup. I take regular rolled oats and run them through my coffee grinder
- 3 tablespoons Coffee grounds
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- Aloe Vera- fresh if available
- Green tea
- 1 Lavender flower
- Sprig of rosemary
- Optional- Avocado oil (coconut or olive oil is also fine)
Since these ingredients are good for the inside of the body, I personally trust that they will be beneficial for the outside. Oatmeal is known for calming skin inflammation. Dermatologist and acupuncturist, throughout my lifetime, have suggested applying oatmeal to skin and even bathing in it. Honey is rich in antioxidant, can relieve sun damage, hydrate skin and can have antiseptic properties. Green tea is also rich in antioxidants and is cooling and soothing to the skin. Lavender and rosemary are beneficial to the skin and aromatic. Coffee grounds, in the mix, help exfoliate the skin.
Instructions:
-
Grind rosemary and lavender in a coffee grinder for best extraction
-
Step green tea, rosemary and lavender in warm water like you would for herbal tea. Make sure there is enough water to absorb oats.
-
Stir in oats and allow mix to set and cool (unless you want it to be warm on your skin)
-
Stir well and gradually mix in coffee grounds, spoon of honey, and aloe. Mix thoroughly.
-
When mix reaches preferred temperature apply to face in a circular motion. Mix can also be used as a body scrub.

Variation for cracking and callused feet:
For my feet I add avocado oil. Coconut, grapeseed oil, or olive oil also works, though avocado oil is closest to the natural oils in skin. Gradually stir in oil adding just enough to maintain firm solid mixture. Apply to feet and wrap cloth around feet several times in the same way you would an ace bandage. Secure fabric with a safety pin or a sock. Keep on overnight and rinse off excess in the morning.
