What is a Chronograph?

A Little History of the Chronograph Watch

The original chronograph watch was invented for King Louis the 13^th in 1821. It seems the king liked to watch horse races and wanted to know how long a race lasted. Nicolas Rieussec, a watchmaker was hired to come up with an instrument that allowed the king to be able to time the races and so the first chronograph was made.

Actually, the first chronograph was made by Louis Moinet in 1916. Chronograph comes from the Greek words “chromos” (time) and “graph” (writing).

Over the decades there has been made updates to this watch. In 1969 watch companies Heuer, Breitling and Hamilton came into partnership and developed the automatic chronograph. They debuted the watch on March 3, 1969 and labeled the “chrono-matic”.

Today these popular watches come as wrist watches but when they first appeared they were pocket watches.

What is a Chronograph Watch?

These kinds of watches can tell the time as well as they have a stop watch function. There are two types of chronograph watches: analog and digital.

Analog chronographs have a center hand used for stop watch functions while sub-dials indicate seconds as well as minutes and hours.

Digital chronographs have a digital display for both the time and the stop watch functions. This can be done using either a separate display or by switches to different modes on a single display.

According to dictionary.com, a chronograph is:

a timepiece fitted with a recording device, as a stylus and rotating drum, used to mark the exact instant of an occurrence, especially in astronomy.
a timepiece capable of measuring extremely brief intervals of time accurately, as a stopwatch able to record fractions of a second as well as elapsed time.
