Cancer Vitamins, Cancer Supplements, Foods for Complementary Treatment of Cancers

by humagaia

Cancer foods, cancer supplements & cancer vitamins should be incorporated into a nutrition regimen, complementing, supplementing & pre-empting cancer treatments.

Many people take cancer vitamins and
cancer supplements without consulting a doctor.
High dose supplements of beta carotene and vitamins A, C and E have increased in sales due to the reported anti-cancer effects.
It is untrue, however, that high doses are more effective than the recommended daily intake.
Receiving your RDA is important, though.
Knowing what the RDA is and which
supplements ensure you reach your recommended intake, is important.

Cancer Supplements and Vitamins - a warning

In fact, high dosage may have an opposite effect and may increase the damage caused by free radicals. High doses of vitamin A can be toxic. It is therefore imperative that you consult your dietitian, doctor or pharmacist before embarking on a high-dose supplement therapy.

For those that are undergoing cancer treatment the situation may be quite different. Some may need high-dose cancer supplements. However, others may be advised to avoid certain antioxidant nutrients because their treatment relies on free radical generation to destroy the cancer cells. Consulting a nutritionist is essential in every case.

Diet and cancer

Diet to Prevent Cancer

As medical knowledge about cancer develops, it is becoming understood that diet may both prevent or cause the occurrence of malignancies, promote their development or slow tumor growth.

Nature Made Vitamin D 1000 IU 300 Tablets

Made with D3, a form of vitamin D that is more easily absorbed into the body, these tablets are maximum strength for bone and joint protection.

A diet high in saturated fat and processed foods is related to the development of some cancers. A diet with greater levels of vitamin D can reduce the risk of breast, colon and prostate cancers.

Fruit and vegetables play an important part of any anti-cancer diet. The bioflavins and plant chemicals; dietary fiber; folate; antioxidants; and vitamin C, may all slow, stop or reverse processes leading to cancer. This is achieved through the neutralization and detoxification of cancer-causing carcinogens; by preventing changes in genetic material; by the formation of protective enzymes; and by reducing hormonal stimulation of tumor growth. Folate is imperative for normal DNA synthesis and repair; can reduce cancer cell proliferation. Low levels may increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Cancer - What not to Eat, Drink or Smoke

Increased risk of colon, uterine, prostate and skin cancers are linked to a high-fat diet and obesity. To decrease fat intake choose lean meat; go vegetarian for a few meals a week; and use baking and steaming methods to limit the use of added fats. Increase your fiber intake to speed the excretion process, thus reducing the risk of bowel cancer.

Limit alcohol intake to reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth, larynx, esophagus and liver, as it hinders usage of carotenoids. It can also deplete folates, selenium, thiamin and other B vitamins.

Smoking increases the risk of lung, esophageal, mouth, laryngial, pancreatic and bladder cancers. If you are unable to stop, then eating broccoli or other green-leaf foods, several times a week, may help. The bioflavinoids, monoterpines, indoles, phenolic acids and plant sterols are all beneficial. Sulforophane, abundant in broccoli, is one of the most potent anti-cancer compounds. Low levels of vitamin C are also linked to smoking-related cancers. To combat this, smokers should eat more citrus fruit. Eating more lean meat, grains, cereals, peas and beans, and leafy vegetables can counter the effect of folate and B-complex vitamin depletion.

Eating large amounts of smoked, pickled, cured, fried, charcoal-grilled and processed meats cause a higher level of stomach and esophageal tumors. Smoked foods contain polyaromatic hydrocarbon carcinogens. The salt in pickled foods can damage the stomach. The nitrites in bacon and hot dogs can create nitrosamines. Eating sources of vitamin C and vitamin E reduces its formation.

What to Eat for the Best Anti-Cancer Effects

For antioxidant flavinoids eat apples, berries, broccoli and green cabbage. For protective effects against prostrate cancer eat tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste, which contain lycopene. To stimulate immune system defences eat garlic and onions.

Drinking green tea, which contains EGCG, may reduce the formation of carcinogens; increase natural defences; and suppress cancer promotion.

Selenium, a powerful anti-cancer trace mineral, can be gained from brazil nuts, seafood, some meats, fish, bread, wheat bran, wheat germ, oats and brown rice.

Most fruit and vegetables have multiple cancer-fighting benefits. Nutritionists recommend a variety of foods instead of cancer supplements as the main defence. Eat three different colored vegetables and two types of fruit, daily. Include one citrus fruit and one cabbage family vegetable each day.

Citrus fruit, strawberries, melon, kiwi, mango, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, peppers and potatoes are best for vitamin C.

Sweet potatoes, carrots, squashes, pumpkin, broccoli, red peppers, apricots, melon, mango and papaya are best for carotenoids.

Sweetcorn, pears, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, potatoes with skin, carrots, apples, berries, figs, prunes, peas and spinach are best for fiber.

Green leaf vegetables, spinach, orange juice, broccoli, avocado, asparagus and Brussels spouts are best for folates.

As you may have gleaned from the previous paragraphs, the best protection against cancer is a healthy diet. If your diet falls short in some aspect then cancer supplements and cancer vitamins can have protective effects. Some enhance conventional cancer treatments and can help to alleviate the side effects. Natural therapies are unproven. They should be used only in conjunction with, and to boost, conventional treatment and relieve any side effects.

Jenny, it is always better to prevent than to medicate after the event. Using cancer supplements, minerals, herbs and cancer vitamins to augment what may be lacking in your everyday diet is a good way to ensure that a balanced diet is achieved, as long as it is in moderation.

Cancer supplements including vitamin C,E,minerals like selenium, antioxidants rich foods can reduce the risk of cancer to very lower level with good effects rather than the medicines.

I agree H_H, as long as your consultant, a doctor, nutritionist, dietician or pharmacist has been consulted to ensure that what is taken does not counteract what the conventional treatment is trying to achieve.
Thanks for passing by.
