Home Made DIY Decorating in Warm Fall Colors

by happynutritionist

Fall color home decorating is inspired by the changing colors of the trees in nature, and gives a warm and inviting feeling to the home. Things made by hand are always special.

Fall is my favorite season because of the colorful fall foliage, foliage tours, and cooler, but not too cold temperatures. The colors of fall are warm and inviting, something I like to enjoy indoors as well as outdoors.

In the 1970's our home was decorated in the colors of fall, including browns, oranges and yellows. Natural tones were popular during that time. Living as I do in a log home in a rural setting, I still appreciate the warmth of these colors.

Fall comes once a year, but any time is a good time to explore fall inspired decorating, and decorations inspired by the color of fall leaves because they make up the warm colors of fall.

How to Make a Fall Door Wreath

Videos plus my easy instructions

Here are some videos about how to make a fall wreaths to decorate your door...some are simple, some more complex, with a variety of ideas.

Simple instructions for making your own fall wreath:

1. Buy or make a grape vine wreath base.
2. Take a fall leaf garland, and wrap it all the way around the entire wreath base.

It's as simple as that, how you wrap it...thick or sparse with some of the grapevine showing through is up to you.

You can add accents if you like, look down further on the page to see the wreath I made and hang outside on our house each year. It will hang on the side of our cabin that faces the road between two windows where all my seasonal wreaths hang as the seasons change...I explain in more detail later.

Fall Decorating Wreath from Dollar Store Supplies

Supplies from a Dollar Store plus grapevine to make a wreath (pictured below)

To make my fall wreath, I went to our Dollar Store and picked up:

2 fall silk leaf garlands
1 pumpkin and pine cone plus fall leaves decoration
1 decoration with an orange pear, fall leaves and an acorn.

I've had an unused grapevine wreath stashed away for a few years that I either made from a wild grape vine we had on our property, or one that I removed decorations from to "re-purpose" it, it's been a while so I don't recall the details.

To make the wreath, I simply ran and wrapped the garlands around the wreath, pulling leaves carefully through the gaps in the grapevine wreath at points to hold the garlands in place. I could have used wire as well, but this worked out fine.

The pumpkin and pear decorations were on sticks that I pushed into the wreath. In a few weeks, I'll remove my summer floral wreath from the front of our log home where it hangs between two windows, and will hang the one pictured where it will stay through the fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving season, to be replaced by my Christmas wreath in December.

Since making this, I picked up another fall leave garland and added more leaves to the wreath.

There is nothing like decorating with things made by your own hands. Personally, I don't think I'd arrange the leaves quite like they are in the picture, I may overlap them a bit at irregular angles, but that's me:-) Here are some of the instructions to make the leaves pictured, there is complete information on how make, felt and finish the leaves at this lionbrand site link.

@sheilamarie And here it is, winter close, though it has been one of the mildest falls we have had in a long time.

I'm thinking of autumn more these days because our temperature has changed. Fall colors do make us feel warm and cozy.

@dustytoes - so do I, we have had two harsh winters in a row, so much enjoying the green while it lasts!

I hate to think that Fall is coming already, but this is a beautiful page.

happynutritionist on 07/29/2015

@WriterArtist so you would combine different color schemes within the same room? That would be interesting to see.

@blackspanielgallery it really is, especially if you live in a forested area like we do.

Fall is a beautiful time of the year.

I love fall colors, they are the colors of warmth. My favourite theme colours for home decor are always a combination of two shades. For example, I would choose yellow and maroon, orange and green, and so on.......

You have showcased beautiful colours for decor, loved the colorful wreath.
