How to Plan a Kid's Birthday Party
These are some of the most basic needs to make a party successful.
The basic needs when planning a kid's birthday party are simple. Parents can expand from the basics and include much more as they choose.
Send invitations and specify the time the party begins and ends. Let parents know if they should stay. Usually for younger kids the parents are part of the celebration, so plan food accordingly. Adults will need food and drink too!
- Decide on a theme (or no theme) and location for the party. Book a spot, if needed.
- Send invitations, with reply contact information (and reply by date), well in advance of the party date. The party invitation templates on this page are able to be purchased as a download. That means sharing online will save lots of time. If you plan to mail them, order well ahead of the mailing date. A true guest count is needed for food and favors.
- For an at home party, decide whether the party will be held outside or indoors. If outside, then be sure to have a contingency plan for bad weather.
- Plan the birthday cake. Bake it yourself, or order it. Skip the cake and have cupcakes or something else.
- Will the kids be fed a full meal, or simply receive snacks?
- Have a few games or activities to keep the kids busy.
- Buy favors for the party goers to take home.
Tractor Party Invitation Templates
Get the party started by customizing party invitations. We currently have two invitation designs with simple to use text templates.
One invitation design features a blue tractor with a cow, cat, puppy and bird. The other template has a red barn and two tractors at the top.
Text areas are blue and brown, with the child's name and age in larger printing. All the party information is in a paragraph with plenty of space as needed.
If you would rather share these invitations online, we offer a one-price download option. Save money on stamps and envelopes and ask for a reply right away. Use the invitation as much as you like.
Summer Farm and Market Birthday Party Food Ideas
With all the focus on gardening and eating healthy, farm and market themed parties are popular. Little boys may enjoy the tractor theme, but tractors help to grow the good food we eat.
The buffet table can be decorated in cute ways. Use fun signs do describe the food being served. Sneak in lots of healthy things because after all, that is what farms provide for us!
Food to serve:
- Cow Patties: Could be a burger, or chocolate cookies
- Pigs in a Blanket: Little hotdogs in dough
- Chicken Coop: Deviled eggs / Chicken nuggets
- Chicken Feed: Snack mix
- Veggie Patch: Carrots and celery with dip / Cherry tomatoes / other veggies
- Tractor Wheels: Pinwheel roll ups / Small chocolate donuts
- Berry Patch: For trays, or small containers of fruit
- Corn Field: Popcorn wrapped in cellophane and green tissue paper.

Celebrate at a Local Farm or in the Backyard
Here are some ideas of how to bring the party to your house.
Obviously the best place to celebrate a farm themed birthday is on a farm. Many rural farms now allow parties to be booked. Check locally to see what they offer. Local petting zoos and hay rides would be great for kids attending a farm party. Often farms will also have an ice cream stand on the premises.
On the other hand, your own backyard might be the perfect spot for a birthday party. Set up your own buffet table and decorate it easily without lugging everything to a location. Have a covered porch? Even better in case of bad weather. Find a local mobile petting zoo and hire them to bring the animals to you. Consider pony rides for the youngsters.
Hire a farm themed bounce house, which every child will enjoy. Let them work out their energy in a safe, padded play area. The company will come and set up the bounce house - usually the day before the event - and take it down after the party ends.
Favor Ideas for a Farm Birthday
I love the idea of using a little box or bag to hold party favors. I also love the idea of giving them out at the end of the party. Hand each child a favor to take home and unwrap.
Candy and little tractors or barnyard animals are obvious favor selections. More useful ideas may be something like crayons and coloring books, or printed coloring pages. Small books about farm life would be fun for young kids. Tractor stickers and tattoos are another idea. Home baked snacks like Rice Krispie treats (hay bales) or cookies (cow patties) could go home in favor boxes.
Balloons are something all kids love. Personalize a little balloon on a stick with a "thank you" message and include it with the favor package.
Activity and Game Ideas for a Kid's party
Along with what I mentioned in the farm location paragraph, more fun games and activities may be needed to entertain the kids.
Choose age appropriate fun, and possibly season appropriate. In hot weather water games are a sure hit. Supply buckets or pails filled with water and let the kids make their own water balloons, or fill toys that spray water. Even simpler, set up a few sprinklers and let the kids run. Be sure to ask kids to bring their own towels and a change of clothes.
When it comes to party games, I believe that the old games are still the most fun. Many are farm themed too! Be sure to have little gifts for the winning teams or individuals.
Indoor and outdoor game ideas include:
- Pin the tail on the donkey, cow, or horse.
- Wheelbarrow races - work best for older kids.
- Rubber horseshoes set, for inside or outside.
- Egg toss, or egg on a spoon race.
- Cornhole bean bag toss game.
- Sit on, and pop, your own balloons first game.

Budget Birthday Planning
A birthday can be memorable without spending loads of money on party games and decor.
If you are on a tight budget but still want your child's birthday to be memorable, it is easy to do. Children will remember the fun... not necessarily the big decorations. Although it may be more time-consuming to make your own party decor, the cost can be cut significantly. Older kids can help out, and would probably love that.
I'm a big proponent of reusing cardboard boxes. Save your cardboard leading up to the party. Make holes, or one hole, in the cardboard and prop it up. Give the kids beanbags to toss and win prizes. Make up your own game rules according to what you have. Use markers and paint to decorate.
Make your own "pin the tail on...." by drawing an animal on cardboard, or an old sheet. Get the family involved in making the tails - which can be attached with tape.
One year we played a pop-the-balloons game for my daughter's birthday. Each party guest had a few (6 maybe) balloons in one color - or put the child's name on his, or her, balloons. When the timer began each child had to sit on, and pop, all of their own balloons. My 35 year old daughter remembers this game to this day because she hated popping her balloons! We were laughing so hard.
A birthday party should be filled with happy memories. Those memories may begin with the making of the decorations, and knowing that this party will truly be unique.
Bunting Garland Birthday Decorations
Hang a banner made of individual flags.
Bunting signs are fun to use at an indoor or outdoor party. Individual flags can be homemade or store bought and come as fabric, plastic or other material. Use a string or rope to weave through the flags and assemble as you wish.
This bunting banner contains 16 flags in swallowtail shapes. His or her age is featured in blue numbers on four of the flags. Other flags have tractor and animal images and a few flag are red gingham checks only. This bunting flags are made of sturdy plastic polystyrene and can be used outdoors. The set comes with a six foot long rope. Easily change the age number one time to show up on all four flags.
