Free Flip Flop Door Hanger Pattern and Tutorial

by Marie

Flip flops make a fun, tropical design to decorate doors during the summer season. See how to make your own cute door hanger with this tutorial and free printable pattern template.

Step your way right into the summer season with a fun and colorful craft to make a vibrant and cute door hanger decoration shaped like a flip flop. Ideal as a rather tropical and beach themed welcome to any guests or visitors to the entrance of your home.

This is an easy handmade DIY that can be created mainly from paper and cardstock and it comes with a free printable template that you can use. Instead of card, you can opt to use craft foam to give some extra height and dimension to the finished piece. Add on a welcome message, name or initials to personalize your project further. Come and see how to make it.

Materials You Will Need

You can make this project just using cardstock, patterned paper and some ribbon or cord but to add in some extra dimension to stop the project from looking too flat, I chose to use some thick craft foam as well. These are the basic supplies.

For decoration, you need to add lettering to make your choice of text. You can do this easily with some craft stickers or if you have a cutting machine like a Cricut. Alternatively, you can print text out from a computer to use and stick to your project. I like to add on extra bits like fabric flowers which you can make or buy.

Make a Real Splash With a DIY Flip Flop Door Hanger

Just one day of sunshine and I'm ready to step into summer already! The warm weather gave me the inspiration for a welcome door sign based on my favorite type of foot wear. You can decorate your front porch or even personalize a bedroom door with this cute flip flop craft by adding your choice of wording to it.

Depending where you're planning to hang it will suggest your actual text. I opted simply for Welcome but you could use the tropical Hawaiian greeting word Aloha or you could add a kid's name for a bedroom sign, some initials, a family surname or a fun phrase instead.

Part 1: Make the Top Section with the Straps

Step 3

Step 1) Start by printing your free template which is further down this page or you can draw out your own design to use if you prefer. Draw around the smaller flip flop template onto patterned scrapbook paper and cut out. I choose one with hot summer shades of oranges, pinks, sky blues and a touch of green.

To add stability to the paper, you might want to stick it onto some thicker cardstock. I do this and then leave a small border around the edges when I cut it out with scissors. Mark where the holes for the straps need to go and punch them out with a hole punch.

Step 2) Choose some ribbon or cord that will work well as your flip flop straps. You need a long length which will be enough for the straps as well as a loop at the top to hang your design. Fold the ribbon in half and push it through the top hole of your flip flop. I use pointed tweezers to push it through. Make a loop at the top which is big enough to hang from your door.

Step 3) Once the loop at the top is made, push the ends of the ribbon into their allocated slots. The left ribbon needs to be pushed into the left hole and the right one into the right. Give enough slack so the ribbon makes curved shapes just like straps would normally do. Tape, glue or tie the ends of the ribbon at the back of your project.

Part 2: Creating Your Hanging Flip Flop Design

Step 4) You'll need some large 3d Craft Foam Pads or Roll of this thick sticky tape to use on the back of your flip flop shape. A roll is easier in this instance because of the size of the project. To get more height, I used two layers of this tape with lengths stuck on top of each other. You could use two or three layers which will help your completed design to really pop out more.

Step 5) When you've made your adhesive foam pad layers, you need to use the larger flip flop pattern template to draw around and cut out of cardstock or a craft foam sheet. I opted for craft foam because it's a bit thicker and looks more like what these real summer sandals are made from. Stick your smaller design into the middle of the larger one and you now have an almost completed hanger.

Step 6) Add on your choice of text to the design. I chose some bright punch out letters and raised them up using small adhesive foam pads. You could use alphabet stickers and I've found some great examples below. You could also use a Dymo labeler or print out some text from a computer to stick on. Decorate your design as you wish. I have a photo of my finished door decoration below on this page for you to use as an example. I hope you've enjoyed reading my wizzles page today, thanks for your visit.
