Hubpages will be acquiring "key content" from Squidoo....and by October Squidoo will be no more.
http://hq.squidoo.com/squid-news/squidoo-and-hubpages/
I am shocked and sad, but not completely surprised. Not that I've been all that active writing online lately anyway, but it's been a big part of my life over the last few years.

Hell's bells...
Glad I removed my content a while ago. Squidoo never earned me more and the constant carping about keeping the lenses up to date used to annoy me, because I have better things to do than be updating my work all the time!

Thanks for that info. I have removed so much from Squidoo and guess I should take care of the rest. That site went downhill fast and I had the feeling something was wrong.
I'm so glad I moved to Wizzley where the admin is up front and honest about what they expect.

I have mixed feelings about Squidoo's demise. I still have been making enough sales on a few lenses to make it worth my while to keep them there. But Squidoo tried so many things to improve itself, and it seemed like with each change, more people were disenfranchised and left, and traffic kept on dropping. There is a huge difference between Tier 1 payouts from it's "heyday" a couple years ago (over $50) and this month's payment when it was under $5 (I think it was that, but I can't access my stats at the moment...typical). I was still hoping Squidoo could pull it together. I hear that many online writing sites have been having problems, and some have folded.
Dustytoes, you'll find info on your Squidoo dashboard. All lenses that aren't WIP status will be transferred to Hubpages in late August or early September. But people can opt out of that of course.

Considering Helium and Yahoo closed, I'm not surprised to hear that Squidoo has folded. I am surprised to hear that HubPages has acquired the "key content."
Personally, I never really liked Squidoo's set up. Considering the amount of work it took to keep lenses ranking highly, it wasn't really passive income. I hope everyone who has content there finds a new home for it without too much hit to income.

Thanks for posting this, I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.
Has anyone tried the automatic transfer of lenses to hubpages yet?
When I click on the transfer button, it looks like I have to create a new hubpages account, even though I already have one. I actually want to transfer the lenses to hubpages only if I can do it with my existing account.
If anyone has done this, please let me know.
If I have to do this manually, then I prefer to transfer some content to hubpages and some content to wizzley.

I am quite shocked to hear this, though i have not written on squidoo but still i have always heard about the 'good money' earned by so many squidoo writers. But this also forces me to think- are we on the right path..who knows what will happen to hubpages in the coming years or to wizzley.

@VioletteRose - it looks like the automatic transfer can only be done to a new Hubpages account. You could probably manually delete, wait for Google to deindex (or use the tool for that), then add the content to your existing Hubpages account.

@younghopes - yes, who knows what will happen to other writing platforms. As people keep telling me, it's good to diversify so if one platform sinks, maybe some of the others will still do okay.

Thanks Karen!
Since it turns out that the automatic transfer to HP can be done only with a new account I think I will move the contents manually to wizzley and hubpages. I only have 20 lenses, so it should be fine.
I do not know much about the Google deindex, how long will that usually take? Should we actually wait if we delete the lens from Squidoo before transferring the contents to either of the other platforms?
Thanks

Hi VioletteRose -- It looks like to move a lens here to Wizzley, you just need to delete it from Squidoo, then it's okay to add it here:
http://wizzley.com/forum/chatter-away-friends/transferring-squidoo-lenses-to-wizzley/
To remove from Google cache (which you probably would have to do at Hubpages), here's one method:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals
I've never tried it though. When I've deleted a page to move somewhere else, I've just waited a couple weeks before adding it to the other site.

Wow! This is quite shocking. I did wonder what happened, when I returned from a week away to find several threads involving Squidoo. I'm sorry to hear about it for those of you whom I know loved the place. I kept meaning to add a lens there, and failed to manage it. -.-
You'll all be made welcome at Wizzley though. :D

And unrelated to all of this kerfuffle about Squidoo and writing online in general, the founder of the system of yoga I practice and teach, B.K.S. Iyengar, died yesterday at the age of 95. I am so much more affected emotionally by his passing than with the upheaval on Squidoo. My mind is 100 miles away from writing at the moment :-)

So what are the alternatives to Squidoo apart from hubpages and wizzley, does writedge allow zazzle products and amazon links?

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. Did you know him personally or respect him from afar?

Oh good.
That means I don't have to worry about writing there as everything I have there is on hold anyway because I never finished the third article to have myself edited and let out of the novices' pen. I'll just move everything here and delete my account there forthwith.
