Total tangent, but is there actually a Black Forest where all this cake is coming from?

Yup, there is, the name comes btw from Kirsch(wasser) the delicious spirit based on cherries the chocolate biscuit is drenched with ... Also good without gateau! SY

PS Black Forest = Gorgeous hiking territory also, and don't get me started on the smoked ham from there - extra yummy!

I have a mental image of a forest made out of gateaux that people hike through now.   I know that you all have things like this over on the continent.   I've read Hansel and Gretel.  I saw that house.

Oh, archetypes! Now we are talking literature! Actually the Brother Grimm collected the fairy tales, transmitted by oral tradition, in a completely different part of Germany. Incidentally where I was raised, near here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sababurg

Lebkuchenhaus! But a forest made out of whipped cream, choco biscuit and cherries sounds even nicer ;-) SY

You could make some homemade toffee, just melt sugar in butter and whip up with cream and let cool, very nice if you need a quick sugar fix!

Sam - an hour ago you told me you need to go to bed.

Amazing what cake pictures can do for your body chemistry!  Laughing

Wow, have no chocolate and came back with Doritos! I daren't start whipping things up now- it's 12.47am. However, Sam, could you post quantities?  Really like the sound of your toffee.

Uh oh, my weak point as a cook - quantities! Perhpas Chef can help? My toffee recipe goes like this:

Let butter melt but not brown.

Add sugar carefully to the point that it still dissolves but doesn't crystallize.

Let cool down, but don't let go hard.

Add whipping cream and beat furiously with a handheld beater / mixer.

Spread out on baking paper and let cool down completely.

Cut in mouth sized bites.

For variations add coffee or vanilla extract in step 1.

Does that help? SY

If you can read German, or use Google translate, this is also a nice recipe http://brf.be/allgemein/83484/ and it has exact quantities! SY

I've translated it, Sam. Looks very good and I like the inclusion of mocha! Bookmarked that too.

I am going to be so fat!

This thread smells good!

Yup, so far we are at chocolate, cherries, toffee, cream and deep fried English breakfast. What is your preferred blood vessel poison? SY

Happy Easter, Arlene.

I'm going to take my mother (who is in a nursing home) out to Easter lunch. I miss the days when I would do an Easter egg hunt with my kids.
