Soccer World Cup to Fifa World Cup

With next year being a World Cup year, I think it might be timely to change the name of the section (under Sporting Events) from Soccer World Cup to Fifa World Cup. The reason is two fold. First, Fifa World Cup is the correct name. Secondly, football is only called soccer in North America. where it is a minority sport. And in some places, notably Europe, the word "soccer" is positively hated and would actually put people off reading it. So, can we please change this?

Done. Thanks for the great tip, Steve.  Smile

Will Britain be playing Germany at all?  *grinning widely at Achim*

If ENGLAND qualifies for the Finals, we may have a chance to beat 'em, Jo.  Laughing

Oops.

And the intelligence coming from those around me here is not to tease Germany too much in this particular tournament.  It's possibly not 1966.

Bring up 1966 at your own peril, Jo.   Yell

But 1966 is all we've got, and probably will be for many decades to come. Even if this England side makes it to the finals, which is anything but certain, it is nowhere near good enough to win.

I watch A LOT of Premier League Football, and I'm always amazed at the speed, skill level, and overall great entertainment value of those games.

I wonder why they're not stronger on the international stage.

Is it the absence of foreign club players in the national team?

Yep! Exactly this.

The English Premiership is arguably the world's strongest league, but it is so because of the vast amount of top overseas players. I love this, because it means week in, week out we get to see the top talent from around the world live on television playing for English clubs.

The national team does not have that option and has to pick English players, and there just are not enough good ones. Some people blame the influx of foreign players into club football, but I disagree. If anything, that should boost the ability of the home grown players as they train and play alongside them.

No, I think the problem is deeper and comes from a lack of proper nurturing of young talent as they move through the school system. That is what needs to be addressed if England is to be leading team again, and it has to be a long-term project. Sadly, it is not really happening.

The English Premiership is arguably the world's strongest league ...

After the last season, the German Bundesliga appears to be a strong contender for that distinction, no?

From your point of view, I can see how such a switch would be hard to swallow.  Laughing

Joking aside ... I just heard the experts on FOX Soccer TV express that view.

Seriously, there is no doubt that Germany had a good year last year, but it was just one season. If they can sustain that dominance for two or three years, then maybe they have a point, but with such good teams in England and Spain, I think it unlikely. Plus Paris St Germain are becoming more a force to be reckoned with.

I think the Champions League this year is more open than it has been for a while. Very hard to predict.

I agree.

The coming season should be very interesting. Lots of great players and coaches moved to new teams. I can't wait to see Chelsea under Jose, and Bayern Munich under Pepe.

Interesting isn't it because I have always thought of Football as Rugby Football - the school I went to would have been horrified at the game which is played with a plastic round ball being called Football - it's soccer Laughing
