Can't wait for more Borderlands games and looking for games like Borderlands to play in the mean time? On this page you'll find some other great games that let you hunt for loot, get lost in a new universe or both.

I'm a huge fan of the Borderlands series, it's got that great sense of humour, deep loot system and just generally well designed worlds that always feel realistic and engaging.

If you're like then you'll know that there really aren't too many games in this space right now which was my main drive for creating a list of the top three for other gamers searching for similar games.

Don't forget to leave a comment at the end of this page with your own recommendations and thoughts about the ones I've listed here.

Dead Island Series

One Of My Favourite Games Like Borderlands

Of all the games like Borderlands I've played I have to give the winning title to the Dead Island series of games. It's got the randomised loot element of Borderlands, some of the humour, skill trees and the same semi-open world environments that you get from Borderlands.

Te game mechanics are really in line with Borderlands and for that reason I found it quite enjoyable. Both games are quite good although if you don't like melee combat you might want to skip to the second game as the first game has a real absence of them. The games are only slightly connected through story so don't feel like you're missing out by starting with the second game.

Both games feature a handful of classes for you to try with a skill tree system that feels very much like Borderlands with three different trees for each that let you push your character into certain directions. Co-operative opportunities are also there to make the game even more fun.

If you struggle to find weapons that you like (I always seem to have bad luck in random games) there is a good upgrade and mod system available to you to create a weapon that is useful.

Fallout Series

A Series Of Post-Apocalyptic Games Like Borderlands

The more recent additions to the Fallout series (New Vegas and Fallout 3) really offer a great role playing experience that I found similar to what Borderlands has to offer. With perks to define your character, countless side quests and plenty of loot to enjoy.

Neither games are connected with story so you can play whichever game you want, they both have very different stories and settings so there is something for everyone in this series. Maybe you want to track down your father in Fallout 3 or seek revenge in the streets of Las Vegas instead. Whichever game you decide to start your Fallout adventure in I guarantee that you'll be playing the other one you're done.

This journey will promise over 100 hours if not thousands as you scour the wasteland for every last location and story that goes along with it. While it doesn't have the randomised loot element of Borderlands the setting, freedom and character development will definitely please Borderlands fans.

The Diablo Series

The Ultimate Loot Hunting Series Of Games Like Borderlands

If it's the hunt for loot that you want to experience again in your hunt for games like Borderlands then I can't recommend the Diablo series enough. It's really the king of the loot hunt genre and it promises to always keep you interested in killing more monsters to see what sort of loot drops out.

The games aren't a first person shooter experience though and instead uses an action role playing type of system. The Diablo series has gradually evolved over time to dramatically improve from the first option to the latest.  The final game (Diablo 3) is probably the best starting point for most newcomers to the experience as it's more forgiving in comparison to the other games were an incorrect build or character design can leave you crippled (kind of like Borderlands).

The story is fairly standard and follows the battle between good and evil but there is enough unique elements to make it enjoyable to follow. Unfortunately if you pass up on the first few games you'll miss out on this experience but if it's just loot hunting your after then jump to the third game.

As a huge fan of the Diablo series since its inception I can testify to the great loot hunt and boss battles that you have in store that keep you searching every barrel, chest and monster corpse for your next item.
